Book Description

Rick Trembles' Motion Picture Purgatory September 2004
Anthology of the best of Rick Trembles' film-review comics. These hybrid film-review/column/comic-strips, seen by 300,000 Montreal readers each week for 10 years, created a new form of film criticism: sequential art lends itself well to the dissection of motion pictures, and illustrations resemble storyboards. This is a handpicked selection of hundreds of Trembles' satirical, detailed reviews, including * Showgirls * Naked Lunch * Touch of Evil * Grease * Psycho * Panic Room * Last Year at Marienbad * Minority Report * Charlie's Angels * Titanic

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings a pulse back to film criticism (and damn funny too), April 25, 2008
This review is from: Rick Trembles' Motion Picture Purgatory (Paperback)
Recently purchased on a whim, this has turned out to be my most rewarding blind buy & favorite book of film criticism. This collection of "comic strip reviews" combines Roger Ebert's appreciation for the craft of film, MAD Magazine's visual detail, the cult film knowledge of Joe Bob Briggs (who justifiably plugs this book), and the scathing wit of Ambrose Bierce.

The cinematic ground that Rick Trembles covers is refreshingly diverse. From the golden to the dreck, the popular to the obscure, the modern to the classics... with a lovely reverence for his fellow Canadian David Cronenberg. I'm surprised by how agreeable I find Trembles' opinions, and I haven't laughed this hard at a book since The Devil's Dictionary.

A few favorite lines:

VELVET GOLDMINE: "An overly affected humourless homogenous hodgepodge of homophonous hocus-pocus... Pizzazzless pouty-pusses populate this paean to poseurs!"

THE PHANTOM MENACE: "One of my fave shots: endless bad guy robots empty out of a battleship resembling toys plopping hot off an assembly line!"

praising KING KONG's (1933) stop-motion: "The jerkiness of Kong's animated rampaging beasts adorns them with a hyper-realism nothing else compares to! Since they were shot frame by frame, each pose is crystal clear, unlike live-action where moving objects blur. The results are otherworldy! It's like putting concentrated rage under a microscope!"

CALIGULA: "Relentlessly ornate one-of-a-kind flabbergasting fiasco!"
