Editorial Reviews

Review

The rhyming and phonics, both crucial elements of language development, will help children to develop critical language skills. But the children will not notice that they are learning as they read and sing along to the simple stories. They will be too busy giggling at the silly illustrations and dancing to the lively tunes. --Lyda Whiting, Awareness Magazine

The inclusion of a musical CD is ingenious. It elevates the books to more than a reading experience. By employing the musical CD, the author gives the teacher more tools for teaching. --Writer's Digest

This series of brightly-colored picture books is specifically designed for the amusement of children ages 2 to 8. The texts emphasize rhythm, rhyme and repetition, while each charming and lively volume is accompanied by the inclusion of a 5-minute musical audio CD. . . . Enthusiastically recommended. --Midwest Book Review

About the Author

Author Patricia Derrick, holds a BS and M.Ed in Education, University of Utah. Patricia has been writing children's rhyming verses for 30 years, using them in her Montessori schools. Those rhyming verses evolved into children's books. The original song on the accompanying CD, sings the words to the text of the book. By singing the song, the child is able to follow along with the words in the book. Soon the child is able to read along in the book.

More About the Author

Patricia Derrick was born in Van Nuys, California in 1947, becoming a public school teacher at age 20. Patricia has owned and operated early learning and Montessori Schools for 32 years. Animalations books are a result many years of working with children in her schools to find new ways to develop language and reading skills. Most Animalations books have an original song that sings the words in the text of the book. When children learn the song, they can read along in the book, even if they are pre-readers. Patricia holds 16 national awards for her books and recently created Intellitale Video Series as an audio and visual experience for very young children developing language skills.

The cubs spend the night in a trash can and then end up piloting balloon so well that they are mistaken for celebrities.

The colors used for the balloons - especially the night scene - are perfectly done.

I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing the Animalations book, "Rickity and Snickity at the Balloon Fiesta". This is an adorable story about Rickity and Snickity, two Rocky Mountain "bear cubs that everyone loves". The cubs hide in the back of the ranger's truck and hitch a ride to the balloon fiesta, where they ride in a balloon, and are beloved by everyone. The book is beautifully illustrated, and the story is accompanied by very rhythmic music that will have children and adults alike singing along. Just as Rickity and Snickity are the bear cubs that everyone loves, this is a book I am sure everyone will love as well!

This is a story of two Rocky Mountain bear cubs - Rickity and Snickity - who sneak onto a car heading for the balloon fiesta and Albuquerque, NM. The cubs spend the night in a trash can and then end up piloting balloon so well that they are mistaken for celebrities. Eventually they are caught by the park ranger but intend to come back next year, at which time they will be too big. The music, lyrics, and artwork are all spot-on in this book - it is deliciously unpredictable and encourages critical thinking. Some questions that arise are: do they really make balloons in the shapes of animals? How fast do bear cubs really grow (can they really not come back next year)? For adults - seeing animals ponder over the paper is really funny, and the author put lyrics from the song in the paper for us (and our kids!) to read. I heartily recommend this book.

Rickity and Snickity are Rocky Mountain bear cubs. They sneak off to Albuquerque with park rangers to go to the hot air balloon fiesta. While there, they see many different balloons of all shapes and colors. Rickity and Snickity get a chance to fly in a balloon, and they fly it so well that people thought believe they are celebrities. There was even a story written about Rickity and Snickity in the newspaper. Finally, the rangers catch up with the cubs and take them back home. Rickity and Snickity have hopes to attend the hot air balloon fiesta again next year; but they don't realize they'll be too big to go. This is a carefree story with little to no moral meaning; however, the illustrations (especially, the colorful hot air balloons) are vibrant and the Latin-style music makes it fun. Kids will enjoy this bear cub tale.
