Editorial Reviews

Review

"An exhilarating saga."
Portland Tribune

“A woman alone in Morocco with an insurmountable task, and she did it with honesty and taste. Kathy Kriger is an entrepreneur, a cook, and a woman with a dream and the tenacity to get what she wants. I was there, and I saw it—Rick's Café in Morocco. The food was delicious, the ambiance perfect, and she's written it all down so you can savor it, too!”
—Jessica Rains, daughter of Claude Rains (Captain Renault) and coauthor of Claude Rains: An Actor's Voice

"As determined, elegant, and eloquent as the lady herself, this is an adventure worth taking. A great read deliciously topped with great recipes. Thank you, Kathy, for 're-creating' Rick's and taking us along for the ride."
—Monika Henreid, daughter of Paul Henreid (Victor Laszlo)

“A cultural adventure that has all the twists and turns of a Moroccan medina, this wry and charming story of what it takes to bring to life a cinema legend is a smoky love song played with soul on Sam's piano. For true aficionados, the cocktail recipes are included.”
—Tilar J. Mazzeo, New York Times bestselling author of The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It

“An extraordinary tale of perseverance, guts, and good humor with more twists and turns than the movie Casablanca itself. It’s a great read!”
—Suzanna Clarke, author of A House in Fez: Building a Life in the Ancient Heart of Morocco

On a recent trip to Casablanca we were fortunate enough to enjoy an amazing lunch at Rick's Cafe and to have the wonderful company of the owner, Kathy Kriger and author of the book, "Rick's Cafe:Bringing the film legend to life in Casablanca". The day we arrived the book arrived from the publishing house in the United States, Kathy brought the book over to our table and told us all about it. Shared so many stories from the book, the incredible pictures. What adventures Kathy and her team went through to create Rick's Cafe. Rick's Cafe is by far one of the best Restaurants & Night Clubs in Casablanca if not the best. If you venture there one evening for sure it is a night to get dressed up as when you enter through the front doors, you are brought into a timeless elegance. It is pure class. If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Casablanca, Morraco...... Rick's Cafe is a must !! This book is awe inspiring and Kathy Krieger is a true gem. I feel once you pick up this amazing book, you won't put it down ! Congratulations Kathy !!

Just like Rick, Kathy Kriger was the underdog in her quest to follow her dream of erecting Rick's Cafe Americain...but she did, and gladly wrote of that adventure. Ms. Kriger's efforts to conduct business in a "man's world" (over there) was an eye opener. There were times I actually found myself holding my breath when she awaited delivery of merchandise as she masterfully described the process of a woman doing business in Casablanca. I cannot imagine a more frustrating goal, and yet, Kathy Kriger made it sound like a great time! Thank goodness for her dreams because now everyone can enjoy it. Casablanca lives!
I love "Casablanca", the movie, so this book was something I just had to read. Kathy Kriger managed to construct, decorate and breathe life into that wonderful place where everyone went: Rick's Cafe Americain. She managed to provide comparisons from the movie to her construction, and brought forth all of those wonderful lines which tied her book together with the movie.
If you love the movie, you'll certainly enjoy the planning, development, construction and opening of "Rick's Cafe" by Kathy Kriger.

"Everybody goes to Rick's" as they say in CASABLANCA.

Except for 62 years they couldn't because Rick's Café Americain didn't exist.

It was only alive in the celluloid dreams and memories of every fan of the classic film CASABLANCA starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

For Kathy Kriger, an American diplomat stationed in Casablanca, Morocco this was an unacceptable reality.

Motivated by her love for her favorite film and a dream of sharing her beloved Casablanca with locals and tourists from around the world Kathy began an incredible journey and adventure bringing her dream to life.

From battling the misogynistic Moroccan business system built on bribery and corruption to finding the perfect piano player to complete her vision Kathy's journey from paper pushing administrator to being embraced by the locals as Casablanca's new "Madame Rick" is inspiring and heart warming.

I am within a few pages of finishing the book and totally surprised at the information it includes.
Our daughter actually child sat for Kathy when she lived in Japan and so we knew her through mutual friends. Never thought of her as a writer. She has done a fabulous job with this book and I have enjoyed it tremendously. I have actually reread a few areas to really understand more about the Moroccan ways. Our daughter now lives in Dar Bouazza and we have visited the area. She has explained business in Morocco perfectly and from a woman's point of view. I am sure this will be a winner!
Congratulations to Kathy for a great job! Everyone should visit Rick's American Cafe and the area around it..

Kathy Kriger had a dream of putting substance to a film legend and in the process of fulfilling that dream embarked on an adventure which she artfully shares with the reader. As you follow along with her on her journey you get a strong sense for the perseverance it took for a western woman to follow her dream and create what has now become a landmark in the Ancienne Medina of Casablanca.

Wow, and I thought it was tough getting a permit in Portland!! What a great story and an amazing accomplishment. It really makes you want to plan a trip to Casablanca ASAP. It sounds well worth the 60 year wait for Rick's to really be open for business. The book does for Casablanca what "Under the Tuscan Sun" did for Tuscany. Pour yourself a Jameson and enjoy the read.
