Not half bad,
By
This review is from: Ricky Martin (Audio CD)
I put off buying this cd for a long time. I hadn't heard very good things about it and I was getting so sick of "La Vida Loca". About a month ago when they started playing "Cup of Life" I almost gave in, but yet I still held back from buying this. Finally last week I heard "Shake Your Bon-Bon" and I finally decided it was time to see if this cd was worth the sticker price. I was not at all disappointed. The music is lively and fun for the most part but there are a few slower songs near the end that kinda bring down the cd's energy level. The Madonna duet song "Be Careful" was an interesting idea, but after a promising beginning it doesn't seem to know when to end. Stick to the faster cuts like "Spanish Eyes", "Shake Your Bon-Bon", "Love For a Day", "The Cup of Life", and "Maria" and you won't be sorry you bought this hugely popular jugernaut of pop culture.

Ricky deserves more credit,
By Robert Rosario Jr. (So. California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ricky Martin (Audio CD)
Back in 1999, Puerto Rican heartthrob Ricky Martin burst onto the mainstream music scene in hopes in proving to the world that he is far more than just a young, sappy Spanish crooner with a pretty face. "Livin' La Vida Loca," although somewhat corny and sugary, conveyed Latin pop perfectly, with its exuberant blend of horns, percussion, guitar riffs, and a catchy, repeatable chorus that can easily be glued inside one's ears. (Of course, Gloria Estefan originally opened the door in the 1980s). Sure, Ricky occasionally wears tight leather pants and shakes his behind like he is God's gift to the world, but the guy has an unprecedented amount of charisma and passion that his peers cannot contend with. Since the hey-days of "Loca," Martin went on to create a sophomore English-language album in 2000 ("Sound Loaded") that is even greater-material-wise-than its predecessor. In addition, he released a Spanish hits collection ("La Historia," 2002) and a subsequent album in his native language ("Almas Del Silenco," 2003) that is perhaps his best album, musically and lyrically, yet. Whenever Martin sings or is on stage, one can feel not only his presence, but also his soul. Believe it or not, Ricky can sing -- and well, too. For being a male singer, he transcends emotion extremely well (perhaps it's a Latin thing). He may not be a songwriter, but his voice and personality shine all on its own. Martin has forever stayed true to himself (his faithful Spanish followers know first hand) and has not let the media destroy him due to his questionable orientation. Every artist, at one point or another, has recorded cheesy songs with commercial appeal; it's natural. However, digging farther into his vast catalogue of material, one will find some of the best Latin/pop music ever created. His ballads are strong and sturdy; his up-tempo songs are full of passion and celebration. The sad aspect of all this is that critics or his peers have never taken Martin seriously, and that's an absolute shame. It's hard to choose a definitive Ricky Martin album since each one is rich and subtenant in their own right. Underneath the good looks and somewhat-flamboyant image is a Latino who is filled with an unyielding sense of passion and love. Anyone who appreciates individuals such as Martin cannot condemn his music, or himself, for that matter.

Four good songs out of fourteen,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ricky Martin (Audio CD)
Out of the fourteen songs Ricky has four good ones: Cuidado Con me Corazon, Livin the vida loca (spanish), Cup of Life, and Maria. All the spanish language songs. I don't think his cross over shows what a talent he is. When I saw him in concert it was the same he seemed restained and artifical in english while his latin numbers were really hot. A real let down after Vuelve. On which every track is great.

I love this CD,

I think this cd is incredible. It's not very often that I can listen to the same cd all the way through, over and over. From the sexy, passionate "Spanish Eyes" to fun, dancey "Shake Your Bon Bon" and even the inspirational "Private Emotion"; there is a different song for any mood I am in. The variety is great and so are the actual songs.

FUN INFECTIOUS POP,
By
This review is from: Ricky Martin (Audio CD)
I was a little leery of this record when I got it as a gift -- but you know what, it is FUN to listen to and gets under your skin. Everybody knows Ricky Martin is not the best vocalist in the world, it is his live performances and good looks that get everyone hot and bothered -- but the production on this album is very, very good, and there are some terrific melodies, especially Diane Warren's I COUNT THE MINUTES, which is superbly arranged. It's a fun, good pop album, and has that Latin kick which is always fun to dance to -- put it on at a party and BAM! your party is a success!

Still Ricky's best,
By

My favorite until this CD was Au Medio Vevir, but Ricky proves he's got more than just a sweet romantic voice on this collection of fast dance tracks and of course the Get Up and Shake Your Booty "Livin La Vida Loca." Ricky takes Latin music into the mainstream like Gloria Estefan and Selena did, and the results are stunning. Enjoy!

Livin' la vida mediocre, but still enjoyable,
By amy wilds fuller (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews

As a longtime fan of Ricky Martin, I was excited when I found out that he was releasing a new album, but I was concerned he would lose some of his passion when singing in English.A friend bought me this CD, and, though I initially listened to it with somewhat lowered expectations, it turned out to be pretty good. This self-titled album contains some enjoyable tracks, including the catchy "Shake Your Bon Bon," English and Spanish versions of the enjoyable, if overplayed, "Livin' La Vida Loca," and new English versions of some hits from his previous CDs. "She's All I Ever Had," and "Bella", its Spanish counterpart, are worthwhile tracks as well. But, as others have mentioned, most of the other ballads are kind of weak and unmemorable. If you're looking for a dose of the gorgeous and charismatic Ricky combined with more solid material, I would recommend you look to "Vuelve," which seems to have less of a "disposable pop" sound, or "A Medio Vivir," which shows that Ricky Martin really is capable of singing some great ballads. I hope that his future recordings follow the tradition of those recordings, rather continue in this slightly "Boy Band"-ish style.

The next best thing to Ricky in person,
By Georgia Miller (Nebraska) - See all my reviews

Granted, all of the songs aren't great, but very few performers can do that. After watching his TV special and then listening to the CD, watching him definitely adds to the listening pleasure. Ricky has a nice voice, but it's not great or distinctive, but he is beautiful to look at. I liked the Spanish versions of the songs best. The ballads were okay, but that is not his forte. I'm glad I bought the CD and plan to buy more of his work.

One song grows on you...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ricky Martin (Audio CD)
and that one song is "All I ever need". This one song saves the album from being ordinary. Lyrics and music go hand in hand and make this number one of the best in recent times. Ricky is in his elements for this number. I could listen to only "Maria" and "Living la vida loca". The rest of the songs just seem to be there to fill empty spaces between the good ones.
