As a professional clarinetist, I appreciate what reed companies have done since my college student days (the late 1970s) to make a variety of high quality products that should meet the needs of a large population of the clarinet world. It used to be that everyone played Vandorens, but then came Morees, Olivieri, and a few others. Today, even Rico--a name once associated only with student reeds--offers several styles of reeds that are used by professionals. The current Grand Concert Select Evolution reeds seem to play pretty consistently and with good response. The one thing to keep in mind when selecting reeds is that the mouthpiece plays a huge role in what style of reed cut (thin blank, thick blank, and so on) will work best for you. These, by the way, are thick-blank reeds and you may find that they work particularly well on mouthpieces with long facings. If you know that these Rico reeds have worked for you in the past, and your local music vendor does not carry them (or insists that you'll have to pay list price if they order you some), rest assured that the Amazon third-party vendors can provide a supply. Although I typically use Vandorens V12s during the warmer months, these Rico reeds continue to be my choice during the months of low humidity and artificial heat.

I just got a Buffet R-13. I used strength 3 1/2 Vandoren reeds before this. My band director was working with me and had me try these out. They had a much clearer and better tone than Vandoren. I would recommend these to someone who is in a high school band who uses a wooden clarinet.

Years ago, the name Rico was associated almost exclusively with a single line of inexpensive reeds that were used almost exclusively by beginners. As the single reed industry broadened out in the 1990s, an almost uncountable number of new brand names, new styles of reed cuts, and various combinations of these emerged. By the twenty-first century, Rico had released a full range of single reeds, from beginner to professional, and reed adjustment accessories. The Rico Grand Concert Select Evolution Clarinet Reeds are unfiled, fairly thick-blank reeds. I am a university music professor and professional clarinetist and I use them exclusively on mouthpieces (Pyne, mostly) with long facings and medium to medium-open tips. They work beautifully! I've recently purchased these both in 3.5 and 4.0 strengths and find them to be very consistent, and with very good projection, stability, and depth and focus of tone. Highly recommended!

The sound and tone of these reeds is right one. It's very clean and bold. Reeds for great and are in great quality.

The only problem is that the reeds do not support any notes above the "Second Register Key C." (which is pretty low for advanced students)
Usually, beginners do not go over the Second High C, so I don't see a problem with this. If you're in the top 2 bands at your high school or if you're in the top 3 chairs in middle school, I highly discourage these reeds. Get Vandorens.

The professional level Rico reads tend to be consistent and great straight out of the box.

The Evolution tend to be firmer than the same strength regular Grand Concert Select. I would say they are more accurately matched to the firmness of the Vandoren reeds of the same strength.

While I have no problem with these length of time these reeds last, I do believe they have a shorter life than say Vandoren V12 reeds.

Good buy.
