So last night I was having some extreme intestinal distress on top of the horrible cold I have, the kind of thing where it sounded like there were devils in my abdomen. This had been going on for a couple days in a more mild fashion but last night it hit in full stride. Using my brilliant powers of deduction I knew it had to be something I had been taking since I had been sick as there was no demon disturbances in my neither regions previous to the illness. Cough drops? Let’s examine… Got the “sugar free” kind. I read the back and right there is says that the sugar substitute can act as a laxative when used too much. Define “too much” when you are hacking your brains out for a days?!?! Needless to say, I called them “devil drops,” and immediately tossed them into the trash can.

My question, why do they even make these things? As if having a cold is not awful enough you have to add insult to injury? Maybe make it so you are too scared to cough and you try to naturally suppress the urge instead? I think anything with that sugar substitute should be illegal or perhaps used in warfare against enemy troops. If you by chance read the Amazon review on the sugar free gummy bears it seems that this sugar substitute has this effect on a lot of people.

Moral of the story: Check the label. Avoid sugar free unless you have to have it for medical reasons or you want your colon clean along with having a cold.

If I could give zero stars I would! Extremely dissatisfied. It did close to nothing for my cough but also, if you read closely, one ingredient is a laxative! I had THE worst stomach cramps and diarrhea you could possibly imagine. If you're going to make a cough drop, create one that doesn't add insult to injury. I mean c'mon, if being sick with a cold wasn't enough, diahhrrea would sure as heck make it worse. I'm going to stick with halls for now on.

Your results my differ, of course. I have used the original flavor Ricola cough drops for several years, and the sugar-free version seems to do just as well. I am allergic to a variety of pollens, molds, and house dust. One of my most annoying symptoms is an itching at the back of my soft palate. I was surprised to find that these Ricola drops stop that itch, which antihistamine pills seem not to touch. So I use the Ricola for this allergy symptom far more often that for cough.

If you want extreme diarrhea with your cough than this product is for you. Ricola may be entering the laxative market without giving us a heads up, it works just like turbo lax but the effects last much longer. Remember that scene from Dumb and Dumber? That's gonna be you in t-minus 30 minutes.

The product is likely not safe for someone with a severe cold or flu; you will lose a lot of fluids.

I have to say, I love this product, and have actually used it for years. When I couldn't find it being consistently carried in ANY of my local stores (supermarkets and drug stores), I decided to order it in bulk from Amazon. I use these daily mostly to keep my mouth moist at night, but I have found them effective in controlling the coughs I get from time to time as well. I needed something that was (a) sugar free, to protect my teeth (b) individually wrapped so it was easy to put in my pocket or purse (c) good tasting and (d) did the job. The Ricola products do it all. By alternating the Mountain Herb with the Cherry versions, I don't get tired of using it. I have gone to other products from time to time, and always came back to these because of the taste (and no aftertaste). I will say, however, that for some reason the other sugarfree flavors Ricola produces don't seem to work as well or taste as good.

I have a permanent cough, and find these lozenges just right to lubricate my throat, especially at night when I often wake up with a dry mouth. I keep a cache close to my bed so I can just reach in and pop one in my mouth. I have never had problems choking on them, even when they take a long time to disolve and I go back to sleep.
I have tried other products, but there are the best.

Have used this product for about 10 years now and it works great. It really knocks out a cough or raspy throat. It doesn't work for me if I have a full on cold with cough though. Haven't been able to get the original swiss herb in stores lately so that's when I turned to amazon.
