Nice Riddim! But Something's Missing. . .,
By Achis (Kingston, JA/Philipsburg, SxM) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Riddim Driven: Gully Slime (Audio CD)
I think the Gully Slime riddim album might just benefit in sales in that it is named rather closely to one of the hottest tunes around right now, Assassin's MASSIVE Gully Sittn. But, you prospective shopper out there, make sure you know, that song isn't anywhere near this album.
What the Gully Slime is a rather standard but nice nice riddim produced by the crew at Natural Bridge (and reportedly built in Ward 21's studio of the same name). The Gully Slime is a definite dancehall style niceness riddim, it isn't anything spectacular or anything you havem't heard before, but its almost something that just feels right to listen to. That standard dancehall bounce; that standard dancehall wine, all come through listening to the Gully Slime. What is unexpected about it is that it pushes more to the hardcore side and looking down the roster of artists selected for the GS, missing are the usual suspects to ride such a riddim (i.e. Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Kartel Busy Signal etc.) and they are replaced by the Christophers, the Kiprichs and the Hawkeyes of the world. I'm not saying that those artists don't belong (okay Christopher doesnt) but the Gully Slime would have been a little bit more 'slimey' had Natural Bridge drew the big guns for the riddim. However, one of the best things about this riddim, is that it is TERRIBLY easy to ride so rarely will you see an artist completely flop it, but some tunes definitely stand out from the rest. Definitely check Lady Saw's I Can Have Your Man as the Empress spares no emotion in absolutely ripping through the Gully Slime on one of her best efforts since her last album (and VP we DEFINITELY need a Saw album (and a Capleton album) in 2007!). Check Kiprich's nice and clever Fi Di Gal Dem (his manager Christopher Birch co-created the Gully Slime) a very nice effort; Ras Myrdak (BIGGUP ALL ST ANN'S MASSIVE!) on the ultra nice All Over You, love that track and it was my favorite for awhile, but still second favorite. As I said, the Gully Slime is very easily ridden by top notch artists, so I can't really say one of these songs are that BAD (even though the hook on Macka Diamond's and Queen Paula's combination A Nuh Your Fault and Garrison by Ward 21 isn't exactly their best work). But definitely the best tune is Natural Bridge's own in house artist Mr Peppa on the truly wicked Gangsta Guerilla! The hit here was (and will continue to be) Tony Matterhorn's Goodas as pretty much everything the man of the moment touches turns to gold, but the real bred man to be a dj, Mr Peppa shows exactly what the Gully Slime is all about as he absolutely caves in the riddim and even further displays his developing DJ skills. Overall, I'd recommend the Gully Slime to real dancehall fans and real dancehall fans ONLY. It actually might even be in the upper echelon of all riddims produced this year. I'm almost upset that certain artists didnt get the opportunity to ride this fine riddim, however it further exposes 2 new big prospects in reggae (Ras Myrhdak and Mr Peppa) to the international audience, so maybe even not so real dancehall fans might even want to check this one out.
