Book Description

March 6, 2007 10 and upFurther Tales Adventures
Riddle me this: A gnome suddenly appears.with a proposition for a young boy -- "Help me and I'll cure your curse."

Twelve-year-old Tom lives alone on an island in the middle of a river. Nobody dares approach him because the boy is cursed -- he brings bad luck to anyone around him. One day an odd little man -- a gnome, perhaps -- comes to see Tom, ignoring the boy's warnings to keep his distance. The hot-tempered, shifty gnome makes an astounding offer: He'll rid the boy of his hex, if the boy will embark on a mission for him. If Tom agrees will it really mean the end of his lonely existence?

With no answers and nothing to lose but bad luck, Tom sets off through the green valleys and peaks of Londria, but he quickly realizes the stakes of this gnome's game are high. And time is scarce. As the chips stack against him in a land riddled with obstacles, Tom wonders if he could be trading his curse for something far worse.

About the Author

P. W. (Paul William) Catanese was born in New York and grew up in Connecticut, where he lives with his wife and three children. When he's not writing books, he draws cartoons and works for an advertising agency.

Interestingly, the letters in "P. W. Catanese" can be rearranged to spell "want escape?" Paul figures that's why people read books like his.

More About the Author

Hello and welcome. If you aren't familiar with my novels, here's the general idea: I take a classic fairy tale and tell you what happens many years later, using the loose threads of the original story to weave a new adventure (a fast-paced, action-packed, sometimes scary adventure, to be more specific). Sometimes the characters from the original tales show up in supporting roles. In "The Thief and the Beanstalk," for example, you'll meet Jack, but he's an old man. The hero is a young thief named Nick who crosses Jack's path. This is a fun premise for stories, because the themes of the old stories echo in the new adventures, and I can look at the classic tale in a new and sometimes unexpected way.

As for me, I was born in New York, lived near Boston for a few years, then moved to Connecticut when I was seven. I live in a small town in the same state today, with my wife and three children. These days, when I'm not writing books, I work for an advertising agency.

Here's a funny little coincidence: The letters in "P.W. Catanese" can be rearranged to spell "Want escape?" And that's why people read books like these, isn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read-together book, March 30, 2007

I'm always glad when the story I read with my son is interesting to me as well. This story, as with all of Mr. Catanese's "Further Tales", is well-crafted and compelling. Tom, a boy forced to live in isolation because he causes bad luck to those around him, is given an opportunity from a beastly little gnome to finally break the curse he has endured. The question is, what are the gnome's motives, and what will he require of Tom? The story has some nice underlying messages about appearances not being the most reliable way to judge others, and even about adoption. I recommend this and all of the "Further Tales".

Every Catanese book has some twist or riddle to figure out. This one had me stumped. I won't give it away, but I was never expecting the ending.
