Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 5--A collection of funny, corny, and sometimes challenging riddles and rhymes based on math. Some are adaptations of familiar rhymes or chants ("Miss Lucy had a student;/his name was Brainy Ben./She gave him some math problems/and told him to begin"). Others involve simple addition and subtraction functions to solve a riddle. Simple, colorful cartoons appear throughout. The riddles appear in black type, with the answers in red just below. These selections can be used as bonus test questions, quick brainteasers, or just for fun.--Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 2-5. "Where do math teachers eat? On multiplication tables." With verbal puns, rhymes, and wild watercolor-and-pencil cartoons, this book makes numbers a hilarious part of schoolyard play, from metric food fights to pizza fractions. The slapstick word-and-picture scenarios will appeal to young children, but some of the math, especially metric conversion and multiplication and division, is more advanced and best for sharing with older children at home and in the classroom. The best pages blend verbal and math fun: "You will discover treasure in an Egyptian (15 - 13) mb." Fortunately, the answers are always right there. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Helpful, January 4, 2004

This review is from: Riddle-Iculous Math (Hardcover)
Kids will enjoy this amusing book on their own and it has many good math lessons. My kids particularly liked the Egg and Spoon Race (subtraction and addition as kids move forward and backward in the race) and The Spud Brothers (teaches even and odd), and Plenty of Pizza (fractions a la Mr. and Ms. Sweet-za eating and sharing pizza). We all liked the math jokes and short riddles thrown in on most pages as well. The art is lively and colorful. I liked the style of it--it's unusual and active. The book is well-organized and packed with info, but not too busy. An excellent math choice for about ages 7-10 or so. (I'm 36, and I enjoyed it too!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Math Fun, October 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Riddle-Iculous Math (Hardcover)
I am using this book in my 5th grade math classes. Math doesn't have to be boring. This book encourages some basic computation and problem solving by way of riddles. There are a few jokes--knock, knock jokes and other grade school appropriate styles. (What's a math teacher's favorite season? Sum-mer.) The illustrations will definitely entertain. No heavy learning here, just a quick, fun way to get in some more practice.
