Book Description

Zoey Kane is known around Riverside for making risky purchases. When her daughter Claire learns a most recent investment is eighty acres on the haunted side of town, she is simply flabbergasted. Amazement takes over the whole town, however, when an old mansion is discovered deep within trees. After the estate is turned into a popular hotel, no one could have expected just how risky this purchase would be.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A very entertaining and fun read.
--Kim, Kim's Bookish Place

The Riddles of Hillgate pulled me in right away. I think it is an unique setting and allows for the perfect setting of mystery packed with humor!
--Jill, Seaside Book Nook

The descriptive writing of the property, the home and the contents makes it come alive and you can almost see it. In fact, I would love to see this in a movie format.
--Lynn Farris, Mystery Books Examiner

I just finished reading The Riddles of Hillgate and truly enjoyed it. This wonderfully written book had you guessing what was next! Always something unexpected and intriguing happening. I found myself trying to figure out the riddles while cooking dinner or one of the other tasks pulled me away from the book. I like to think that I am a strong woman but Zoey and Claire were much kinder and braver than I would have been under the same circumstances. They are what I strive to be. I can't wait to read the sequel Cruise to Murder.
Do you believe in ghosts? what would you do if you suddenly found yourself wealthy?

3.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Fun Read October 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was a light and zany, quick read. At only 138 pages, this book is short enough to be finished in an evening (I'm a fast reader.) Zoey and Claire Kane (also the names of the authors of the book) are the perfect example of Murphy's Law. There is always something going wrong, from Claire driving into a ditch, to the skeletons in the mansion and a murder on the opening night of their hotel.

There was a little bit of everything in this novella from romance to murder to ghosts (or were they ghosts?) I love how Zo and Claire have such a wonderful, close relationship - even to the point of a double date!

Some of the events are quite far-fetched or illogical, but it would be a spoiler if I mentioned them, so I won't. This book is not meant as a serious read, so these improbable events don't really hamper the story.

Lots of fun for a light-hearted read. I gave this book 3 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cute, fast read February 16, 2012
By Colette
Format:Kindle Edition
The Riddles of Hillgate was just a fun read. I enjoyed it because it was an over the top, slightly crazy mystery. I loved the mother daughter team of Claire and Zoey. They reminded me so much of my mom and I. Claire kept me laughing by second guessing her mom's decision, and how surprised she was when her mom was right about something.

The mystery surrounding Hillgate was fun, and even if it was a bit unbelievable that they turned the mansion into a running hotel in a short amount of time, I loved that part of the book didn't drag on forever. The mystery itself was one surrounding the house and it's former occupants. It had a little bit of everything: murder, the possibility of ghosts, and a lost treasure. Figuring out how everything would come together was the best part of the book for me. Fans of mystery books might solve the case a little sooner then I did, but I enjoyed how there were a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming that made my theory of what happened to the former owners of the house totally wrong.

The cast of characters was great-aside from Zoey and Claire there were the hotel guests, a town that reminded of Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls) where everyone knows everyone and what they are doing and when it happened, and the romantic interests of both Zoey and Claire.

The Riddle of Hillgate is perfect for when you are looking for a fast read that is light and entertaining. I can't wait to read more adventures of this mother and daughter team. I am thankful for twitter for finding this read for me!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew Meets Scoby Do October 1, 2013
By Doc
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Definitely an easy read. Would be fine for a young teen or anyone who wants a light mystery of the Scooby Do Variety. ( I always liked Scooby).

I enjoyed the book and would have rated it a little higher but it was a little choppy and they never did account for the skeletons in the basement (aka unneeded plot twist).

There are some good ideas from this mother daughter writing team. The daughters background in YA fiction definitely shows. There are at least two more books in the series. I will try at least one more. If they hit their groove the series could have promise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Cozy Mystery October 5, 2013
By Christy
Format:Kindle Edition
The Riddles of Hillgate is a cute, cozy mystery with all that you'd expect from a cozy. It's got the female protagonists who end up with a mystery to solve on their own.

Poor Zoey has had some bad luck in real estate. So when she buys a huge plot of land, by the dump mind you, sight unseen, the townsfolk are less than kind to her. They make fun of her purchase and look down on her business sense. Fortunately for her, her daughter, Claire, shows up right around the same time, and she takes her to explore this plot of land. Things don't look too promising when they first start looking around. There's a graveyard and a huge hill and lots of weeds. But when the fog begins to clear, they notice a huge mansion lurking in the distance. And it's all theirs! It's still full of antique furniture and clothing. So they do what anyone would do in their circumstances....turn it into a hotel!

This hotel endeavor runs into some snags, and it seems the place is haunted! Is it haunted? What really happened at the mansion that all the furniture and clothing are still there? You'll have to read to find out!

This book is quirky and silly and a good quick read. The mystery isn't bloody or gory, and the language is clean. It's the type you need to read once in awhile for your mental health :)

This review first appeared on my blog Christy's Cozy Corners.
