Kyle Owen is slowly recovering from a dark, foggily recalled time when his only job was to kill. He was rescued by his friends at the Keystone Ranch. When they found him, he was badly injured and acted as though he'd been drugged. They nursed him back to physical and mental health. When a lone female rider arrives at the ranch and condemns him for treachery, all the horror of his years in Crannog comes rushing back, and he subconsciously realizes his destiny has yet to be played out. He sets out for Crannog, but a winter storm forces him to take shelter, and he descends again into madness. Two winters pass before he emerges, cleansed of guilt and willing to acknowledge his own value as a human being. This novel is loosely based on the Arthurian legend of Owain, who lived with the animals for years before reclaiming his own humanity. Work, author of The Tobermory Manuscript (2000), takes the concept of the mythic western and does it one better, outfitting an ancient tale in spurs and chaps. Wes Lukowsky
