I think the book was very good overall.,

I think the book was really good...it portrayed the characters in a different type of light. My personal perspective was that it was very well written...It is seldom that someone can describe and tell without making us all snooze in our seats. This is also a good book to read in class, because there is much to discuss. There is more to the story than you see by reading it. You must think about the whole plot and relate to the character. So, this is a definite must read!

History Plus but does it Matter?,

I learned about the plight of Revolutionary soldiers and the New Jersey battleground. However, although several of the minor characters are well portrayed and involve the reader's emotions and hopes, the lead character Mary Cooper, does not...at least in my reading. This book is well written and the plot (I assume most of it is historically based) has good twists and turns. It may well have been difficult to portray two young women in semi 'lead' roles and make their problems tug at the reader's heartstrings. Even such a good writer as Ann Rinaldi can't be perfect!

Not a Favorite.,

This book is okay but I much rather would have read about Mary Cooper's life before she came to live with her awful cousin and aunt. She seemed like more of an interesting person and a staunch Patriot than her stuck-up cousin.

Ms. Rinaldi's fast-paced twisted plot is flawless. However, it seems to me as though the character Tempe Wick is like a tangle of weeds. Although Mary's developement is perfect I feel as though Tempe isn't so compelling.

Ann Rinaldi has done it once again! This book was completely breathtaking. I couldn't put it down once I got into the plot. There's Ann Rinaldi's chracteristics in this book : History and romance combined.

I thought that this story was one of the best!! Having read numerous of Ann's historical books I thought it was one of the best. The narrirator, Mary, helped descibe it even though it was about Tempe. It was a good time frame. I'm studing Americas wars in school and this was a total help! Once again Ann has written a wonderful book!

This is one of the BEST Rinaldi books I've ever read! It's about fourteen year-old Mary Cooper. She goes to live with her cousin Tempe Wick, who despises her more than anything. Throught the book, you learn of Mary's life with her cousin, up until the point when the "mutiny raid" occurs. Mary witnesses the frightening scene, as well as helps Tempe save her beautiful horse, Colonel, from Billy Bowzar. I loved this book SO MUCH! If anyone passes this book by, they'll be missing out! It's filled with suspense, adventure, and a little bit of romance! The PERFECT BOOK! Great job Ann!

Original, but too much cheesy romance,

Eh, rather too much lust and love in this Rinaldi book. Too much details on Tempe's love interests than what this book should have focused on: history. Nevertheless, a pretty well rounded Rinaldi book, I personally recommend this. A very original historical.

Ann Rinaldi wrote another great book. I've almost read all her books. Mary Cooper, the main character, has a wonderfully developed character. If you like this book, read Time Enough For Drums. It is her best book. It is out of print but it can be found at the Dutch Amazon.com or Amazon.de
