5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful rhyming
I give this book most of the credit for the fact that my 3 year old was the first in his pre-school class to understand rhyming. It's easy and fun to read with a lot of interesting animals (like kudus) and place names (like Saskatchewan). The beautiful illustrations add to its delight. This is easily my favorite book to read to the kids.

1.0 out of 5 stars Grossly overrated!
I am so glad we checked this book out from the library rather than spend money on it. The "poems" are short and stupid; I cannot believe even a 2-year-old would find them funny. If you live in a major North American city, that city's name might appear in a poem and your child might find that neat; other than that, I see nothing here. Beware, if you have...

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute delight...!, March 8, 2007
This review is from: Ride a Purple Pelican (Mulberry Books) (Paperback)
For those who appreciate silliness, whimsey, and the supple flow of language used well, this book is an absolute delight. While many children's book authors try using rhyme in their works, few do it with the gracefulness and sense of sheer fun that poet Jack Prelutsky brings to the form. Add to his words the colorful, kooky draftsmanship of artist Garth Williams, and you've got an instant classic. These ditties combine elegant feel of A. A. Milne's poems with the giddy abandon of good, old-fashioned limericks. Most of all, they are fun to read, and equally fun to listen to... And don't be surprised if you and your kids wind up memorizing a few of them, to recite for years to come. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ride A Purple Pelican, October 12, 2005

Prelutsky's nursery rhymes are just what the young children need for their language development. they include places and artifacts from the American culture that English speaking children can pick up, and second language learners can learn. The first poem my young son, three years old, memorized was Late One Night in Kalamazoo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Rhymes and colorful, silly illustrations., December 23, 2001
This review is from: Ride a Purple Pelican (Hardcover)
The rhymes were a bit tricky to read and I'm not sure if my almost-four-year-old understood them all, but she enjoyed the sing-song sound of them, when I didn't flub reading! She liked the illustrations and I did to, as I have a particular fondness for Garth Williams, who has illustrated some great books from my childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ride a Purple Pelican, August 6, 2001

My 2 year old daughter loves the rhymes in this book. They are very simple, and silly which is perfect for age. I love the fact that the author does not hesitate to use longer words and real places (like Saskatoon) in the text to help encourage interest in the world.

Children absolutely love the silly and melodic rhymes in this special book. It is one that children will save and read to their own children. So sweet, funny and special. I find myself reciting the poems in my head and laughing.

I love this book! The one I got was great condition too. The illustrations are beautiful, and the poems silly, quirky, and sometimes a bit melancholy. I grew up reading this book and my childhood wouldn't have been the same with out. Now that I'm grown I love that I can relive it! :)

My children loved this book: wonderful poetry, rhythm, imagery, and pictures covering a wide geography. This collection is a musical joy for babies & toddlers learning language and an early love of books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book of Children's Poems, June 15, 2009

Hands down, there is no better book of poems for children. The colors in its pictures and the sound of its words are precious and impossible to forget.
