Editorial Reviews

UK two CD collection from Blues vocalist and harmonica player. Little Junior Parker left behind a remarkable legacy of hits and influential releases, recording for legendary labels like Modern, Sun and Duke. Ride With Me, Baby contains both sides of all 23 single releases from the first ten years of his career, plus nine other recordings from this period. During this time Parker enjoyed nine Billboard R&B hits all making the Top 10. Parker would enjoy further hits up until his death, but never again made the Top 20.

JUNIOR PARKER-RIDE WITH ME, BABY: Although not nearly as well known as his Memphis counterparts B.B. KING and BOBBY "BLUE" BLAND, suave, silky voiced harmonica blower HERMAN "LITTLE JUNIOR" PARKER brandished a similar, sophisticated blend of urban blues, jazz pop, and sweetly sanctifyin' soul. PARKER pumped out a pair of landmark early sides for SUN RECORDS, who courted blues artists long before hitting paydirt with rockabilly. The raucous FEELIN' GOOD, which was influential enough to prompt numerous knock-offs (BROWNSVILLE STATION even referenced it in their late 70s cult classic MARTAIN BOOGIE), and his shuffling MYSTERY TRAIN, which ELVIS soon made his own, remain indelible roots of rock & roll standards. PARKER's subsequent work for the MODERN and DUKE imprints yielded slicker, more contemporary fare, including big RNB charters like the loping, horn-punctuated DRIVING WHEEL, a sly cover of SWEET HOME CHICAGO, the highly dancable BAREFOOT ROCK, and an occasional novelty like ANNIE GET YOUR YO-YO. The superb double platter RIDE WITH ME, BABY ponies up over fifty sublime tracks covering PARKER's peak period from 1952-1961, the most comprehensive collection available on this stylish, highly underrated bluesman.

RATING; FIVE DRIVING WHEELS

I feel like I'm beating my head against the wall as far as even bothering to write this review. Yes, this very fine collection of Herman "Little Junior" Parker's music is a European release, and is only available there. In the U.S. it's even harder to find-so why write a review at all? Because Parker's fine sides are going the way of a number of other artists-into the memories of a relatively few people who still remember him. In this day of instant pop "glory", musicians like Parker are being forgotten, and relegated to small labels (if at all), with (usually) very limited notoriety and availability. It's sad to see great music (especially in the jazz and blues genres) become difficult or impossible to find on "the shelves". If you've heard Parker's music, and want to find this release-good luck. His music is worth it. It's taken over 40 years since his death, for this fine collection of Parker's first ten years of music to appear.

The accompanying 15 page booklet contains a short, concise essay on Parker and his music. Also included are several great photos of Parker, color reproductions of record labels and album covers. Most important is a discography of all the tracks in this collection. Especially with hot players like Johnny Ace (piano), Matt Murphy (guitar), Earl Forest (drums), Ike Turner (piano), Pat Hare Guitar), Roy Gaines (guitar), Red Holloway (tenor sax), Arnett Cobb (tenor sax), James Booker (piano), Clarence Holliman (guitar), and Wayne Bennett (guitar), and a number of unidentified horn players and rhythm section personnel.

Why "Little Junior" Parker isn't well known (or relatively known) is a real mystery. He was finally voted into The Blues Hall of Fame 30 years after his death in 1971.

This was exactly as expected and quite good. Downgraded the product because of the songlist for disc 1. The songlist for disc one is the same as for disc two and it makes ripping it a challenge. For the Windows Media Player, you have to edit the songlist for the disc before ripping or you cannot rip both discs. If it hadn't been for this flaw in the product, it would have been a five star rating.

Junior Parker is one of my favorite blues artists. This is a great group of songs that any blues fan should enjoy. Liner notes are interesting and informative and songs include "Mystery Train", later recorded by Elvis Presley, and, in my opinion, one of the best upbeat rockin' songs of all time, Junior's version of "Barefoot Rock" is worth the purchase. Highly recommend this album and I hope that more of his music becomes available in quality productions.

It's too bad that Little Junior Parker never got the success he deserved. Perhaps he would have been recognized had he not died at thirty-nine years of age.
