Another fine Snyder book,
This review is from: Gib Rides Home (Paperback)
I suppose I should first say that I've been a fan of Zilpha Keatley Snyder's for many years. I'm so pleased to see that this book holds up to her The Velvet Room and The Egypt Game, to name just a few.I hope CT elementary school students voting for the Nutmeg award give this book a chance, even though the length may be a bit much for some of the younger voters. Gib is a wonderful character: brave, forthright, sweet, caring, and generous. We are told just enough about his life in the orphanage for our hearts to be touched and to yearn with Gib that he will find a home. And we shudder and even tear up a bit when he loses the home he finds and winds up back at the orphanage. But between those events, we cheer for him, we come to love Hy, Hoop, Mrs. Thornton, and even Olivia, and we vicariously enjoy Gib's invigorating rides on the range and the good times he has on the Thorton ranch. Snyder makes her characters and their times come alive. And she feeds us just the right amounts of information in the teasing mystery of why the Thorntons first left him in the orphanage and then, so many years later, came to get him. It certainly made me want to keep reading! (In fact, when I thought I'd lost the book, I was quite upset at the thought that it was going to take me days or weeks to find out Gib's whole story!) There's a sequel to this book, and I certainly intend to read it.

This book isn't, sci fi, or a fairy tale, it has no blood and guts. But it does have a little boy who is an orphan, and wants a family. This book is a very good book, I think with great character devlopment. It almost felt like you were him and I could actually sense how he was feeling. I really enjoyed this book and would recomend this to anybody who enjoys reading.

Historical Fiction Review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gib Rides Home (Paperback)
You can ride home with Gib in Zilpha Keatly Snyder's book called Gib Rides Home. it is a story about an orphanage in the early 1900's in downtown Harristown, Kentucky. Since they could remember, Gib and the loyal Jacob were best friends until Gib met the sweet and sour feeling Olivia at Rocking M. Gib and Jacob are seniors in the Lovell House orphanage. Rocking M is Gib's homtown where his mother and father used to live.Gib hears about getting farmed-out to very miserable people in the Lovell House of Orphaned and Abandoned boys. When he is adopted, he has a lifetime experience in hes own hometown, Rocking M. The reader will love the book because it is full of great description and excitement. Also, you will love the way the author creates pictures for the different settings. A reader who loves horses will love the book as Gib tries to rescue this horse called Black Silk. When you finish this book, you feel a mixture of happiness and sadness. I hope you enjoy as much as I did this emotional story.

This book is so good. It could only have been better if it had told you more about what happens after the end. But there's another one called Gib and the Gray Ghost that tells you that. As a matter a fact I have all ready ordered it. This book is about a goy named Gib wholives at an orphanage. He knows nothing of his past and only has a few jagged memories and he's not sure that there even real. Someone comes for him though. He's just farmed out but they used to know his mother and father. Still he feels a little out of place here. Will these people ever except him?

"Gib Rides Home",
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gib Rides Home (Hardcover)
Gibson Whittaker became an orphan at Lovell House, but someone adopted him and he thought he got "farmed out," so Gib tried to make the best of were he lived, then he made friends with Livy Thornton and her family, that adopted him. I agree with the way the author wrote this book because I like the way shewas descriptive and she told what Gib thought and what new his family thought. She made the book grab my attention! I would recemend my book to people that like tragic stories and happy endings because there is a lot of that in this book! Take my word for it, it is really good!

Gib Rides Home was a really good book. The beginning was a little boring, but it got a lot better and the end was really great. Gib lived in an orphanage, but he was farmed out and found the family of his dreams. He got taken back to the orphanage because of a small incident that wasn't really his fault, but in the end Miss Hooper and Hy brought him back to where he belonged. You should definately read this book.

Gib Rides Home,

Gib Rides Home was a very sad sorry about a boy who's parents died. There was too much violence, with the teachers beating the children and one boy even died. This story has been called "heart warming" I dissagee. The story line was interesting and the charactors were wonderful, but the ending left you hanging. You never find out if any of the other suffering children received help. This book would have been good and "heart warming" if the author finished the story not left you wondering if Gib ever went back to help the others.

Best book I EVER read!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gib Rides Home (Paperback)
In this story a boy named Gibson Whitaker came back to the orpanage he was in a long time ago.He was adopted to a ranch a few miles from the orpanage. He met a girl there named Olive who was sweet-looking and snotty.(a little!) He also met a man named Hu who was very nice to him. When he went back to the orpanage, Gib told his best friend,Jacob, all about his stay at the ranch. He also told practicly everyone at the orpanage. He told them about the GREAT food, and the horses, one particular whos name was Black Silk. He also told them about how his own mother rode Black Silk and he did too. He wonders if he'll ever really be adopted to someone who loves him. And you'll have to read the book to see what happens at the end!!
