5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered treasure!, May 16, 2011

This review is from: The Ridge (Mass Market Paperback)
This book only looked so-so by the cover, but it was only a penny used, so I thought, what the heck? I'd
check it out. If it was decent, great, if not, I only wasted a penny.
I was actually shocked by how good it was! I was riveted from the start.
Plot Summary: Seven years ago, Carole took her baby daughter and fled her husband when she found out what he
did for a living: he was a hit man for a faceless, shadowy corporation. Now, today, remarried with a new family,
she fears that her ex is stalking them.
She is tragically wrong. But by the time her ex husband learns of it, she and her family have been killed in a
massive unexplainable explosion, except-miraculously-for now seven year old Sara.
Nick Vears arrives in North Carolina to find out what happened, only to find himself the prime suspect in the
murders because of his occupation.
The Ridge is a haunted ex-monastery perched high on a cliff over a series of spooky caves. Local legend has
it that the monks who once occupied the place were actually black magicians in search of ancient power. A
complete skeptic, Vears moves in with his now orphaned daughter, determined to find out what happened.
He is a Very Scary man, who is saved only by the fact that we, the reader, knows he's not the killer. As a
result, we simultaneously fear him and root for him as he hunts the real culprits. It's a disconcerting feeling
that keeps the reader constantly off balance.
At first, he only intends to use his daughter to learn what happened, then dump her on her aunt, who is a
constant thorn in Vears' side. But as the story progresses, it's very touching to read as actual tenderness
and fatherly concern overtake this coldblooded man.
A group of punk rockers who live down the beach discover the caves and attempt to recreate the last ritual
that the monks were supposedly destroyed by, and it becomes a chilling race between ancient magic and modern
assassin. Who wins?
You won't be sorry if you pick up this book and find out. It is absolutely a scary, grade A read.
