Editorial Review

If you're looking for the ultimate in road-racing realism, you've definitely clicked on the wrong title. But for pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing, Ridge Racer 64 brings home the checkered flag. Most of the racetracks are direct ports (with new scenery added) from the older Ridge Racer games for the PlayStation, but if you're new to the series, the Nintendo 64 version offers a great introduction to the classic racing franchise.

Ridge Racer 64 features 25 different racing cars--but you'll need to win a race in order to unlock many of these sporty vehicles. Each car presents its own challenges, as control varies widely for each vehicle. The luscious graphics help create the game's illusion of speed. In particular, the feeling of a fast-moving environment remains intact in the processor-crunching four-player mode.

The Ridge Racer box claims the game features nine racetracks, which is only partially true. The game actually has three tracks, with three gameplay variations for each track. According to my math, that still adds up to a total of three tracks. Seasoned Ridge Racer fans will tear through these courses in practically no time at all, while newbies might discover a less than deep racing experience.

Fans of pure arcade racing will love the gameplay simplicity and stunning graphics of this winner. All in all, Ridge Racer 64 offers a ride that's fun, but way too short. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Impressive, speedy graphics
  • Great fun in four-player mode
  • Great no-brainer fun

Cons:

  • Contrary to the game box, the game has three--not nine--tracks
  • Game isn't particularly deep
  • Experienced racers will breeze through the game

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridge Racer shouldn't be passed by, July 14, 2001
This review is from: Ridge Racer 64 (Game Cartridge)
The only way I can see to start this is to ask a few questions: Do you like racing games? Do you like very fast racing games? Do you like very fast racing games with a four-player support? Do you like very fast racing games with a four-player support that lets you choose from over twenty different cars and over fifty different colors? Well, you need not look any further. Ridge Racer 64 has to be the best [semi-realistic] racing game on the system. Granted, there are very few tracks to race on (which I find is its only down-point). But playing against friends and the ability to power-slide around corners will last... quite some time, frankly. And for the cheap price it's been going for, you really can't go wrong. Even if you don't like racing games.

I hate simulation racing games, so when one day I decided to rent Ridge Racer 64, I wasn't expecting anything good. Wow, what a surprise. It got boring after about ten or fifteen minutes, there are only three tracks in all, which is horrible for a racing game. Save your money, buy F-Zero X, Mario Kart 64, or Diddy Kong. Don't even bother thiking or even renting this turkey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burn Rubber!, March 9, 2000

I don't own a huge library of racing games but Ridge Racer qualifies as an excellent game. The smooth graphics (no darn fog)and feeling of big time speed set this game apart from alot of racers. I think the music is a compliment to the game as opposed to an intrusion. The variety of cars isn't bad but they don't look much different from one another and the ability to mix colors is an interesting one. In some ways I found the difference in engines a little confusing. I personally didn't notice a huge difference going from "S" all the way up to "Z" but the speed is something. I literally couldn't keep my car on the road using the Ultra Z model. The multiplayer mode is good and enhances the replay value greatly. I found the tracks to be challenging and beautiful but maybe a little redundant. This is no easy game. Winning is tough and control of the cars is touchy but once you master the sliding techniques you'll get better. I agree that the collision part is unrealistic though. Cars should show visible damage and the computer opponent shooting ahead of you is frustrating. I recommend the Revolution mode. As with most games a rental is recommended but my guess is you will like it enough to buy!
