5.0 out of 5 stars Ridge Racer shouldn't be passed by
The only way I can see to start this is to ask a few questions: Do you like racing games? Do you like very fast racing games? Do you like very fast racing games with a four-player support? Do you like very fast racing games with a four-player support that lets you choose from over twenty different cars and over fifty different colors? Well, you need not look any further...

1.0 out of 5 stars Got really boring, really fast
I hate simulation racing games, so when one day I decided to rent Ridge Racer 64, I wasn't expecting anything good. Wow, what a surprise. It got boring after about ten or fifteen minutes, there are only three tracks in all, which is horrible for a racing game. Save your money, buy F-Zero X, Mario Kart 64, or Diddy Kong. Don't even bother thiking or even renting this...

Do you like very fast racing games with a four-player support that lets you choose from over twenty different cars and over fifty different colors? Well, you need not look any further. Ridge Racer 64 has to be the best [semi-realistic] racing game on the system. Granted, there are very few tracks to race on (which I find is its only down-point). But playing against friends and the ability to power-slide around corners will last... quite some time, frankly. And for the cheap price it's been going for, you really can't go wrong. Even if you don't like racing games.

I don't own a huge library of racing games but Ridge Racer qualifies as an excellent game. The smooth graphics (no darn fog)and feeling of big time speed set this game apart from alot of racers. I think the music is a compliment to the game as opposed to an intrusion. The variety of cars isn't bad but they don't look much different from one another and the ability to mix colors is an interesting one. In some ways I found the difference in engines a little confusing. I personally didn't notice a huge difference going from "S" all the way up to "Z" but the speed is something. I literally couldn't keep my car on the road using the Ultra Z model. The multiplayer mode is good and enhances the replay value greatly. I found the tracks to be challenging and beautiful but maybe a little redundant. This is no easy game. Winning is tough and control of the cars is touchy but once you master the sliding techniques you'll get better. I agree that the collision part is unrealistic though. Cars should show visible damage and the computer opponent shooting ahead of you is frustrating. I recommend the Revolution mode. As with most games a rental is recommended but my guess is you will like it enough to buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridge Racer at its Finest., June 29, 2001
This review is from: Ridge Racer 64 (Game Cartridge)
This game has the classic ridge racer format. You race a series to unlock the same series only differant. Differant paths open up in the course making it a somewhat different course. To get new cars you have to first challenge that car in a race. If you win you get the car. There are plenty of cars to get that handle very differently and the graphics are smooth even with the amazing speed of this game. With that said I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of fast arcadey style racers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best N64 driving game, March 7, 2000

The physics and handling characteristics of the cars in this game are blatantly unrealistic, and the cars themselves are not modeled on actual vehicles, but who cares? This game is all about massive powerslides and delivering a palpable sense of speed. Some might complain that there aren't enough tracks in the game, but the key here is that there aren't any bad tracks. This is an extremely polished product, with gameplay strongly favoring fun over realism.

Graphics: Not mind-blowing, but way above average, with extremely smooth framerates, zero pop-up and nice touches like pseudo-motion blur.

Sound: The soundtrack features a decent selection of non-annoying techno tunes. No match for the Wipeout series on the Playstation, but way better than, say, the music on SF Rush. Sound effects consist mainly of a crumpling metal sound whenever your car hits something.

Now this is something. If you thought Namco didn't like Nintendo for using Carts instead of CD's, well think no more. Namco made an excellent new Ridge Racer game for the 64. Now, the frame rate is smooth, the excellent graphics are crisp, the number of hidden cars, extras and secrets will keep you playing for hours to come. Now this is a game you can play for awhile and make fun of Playstation gamers for not having a version this good!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best racing game, but is fun, April 5, 2001

I bought this game and finished it within 2 days. There are only 3 tracks (with 9 modes) so you end up playing the 3 tracks over and over until you finish on expert. Then the credits display. After that, you get awarded the same 3 tracks but be able to drive them the other way. Wow, now that's an award. Ok, so the cars are fun to earn and mess with, and the graphics are good, but this game is short lived.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best racing games for the N64...5 stars, January 13, 2011

Namco's beloved Ridge Racer series was revered for being the best, arcade style racing games to ever grace a console system ....and it was only on the Playstation. From the arcade scene, it moved to the PS1 and helped sell lots of systems. Then, Namco made a huge announcement: an enhanced version of Ridge Racer was released on the N64 in 1998. It had all of the tracks from the PS1 title, all the cars and stages plus 4 all-new tracks and up to 4 players can race each other at the same time.

The graphics are sharp and colorful. The frame rate does not drop at all and the music is vintage Ridge Racer all the way. The controls are easy to get into. The game gets harder as you progress through the single player mode, unlocking cars and stages but it's fun at the same time. If you love racing games and you come across this gem, pick it up. ******HIGHLY RECOMMENDED*******
