I spent a few years on a horse and cattle ranch with 35 miles of cast iron and galvinized pipe. All our pipe wrenches were Rigid made and I trusted all of them in some of the slipperiest, nastiest places on the ranch, often where a slip of the wrench would mean a broken bone. Caked in mud, manuer, grease or worse these wrenches were always easy to adjust and quick to bite. I'm guessing the same can be said of the aluminum models too. I just like the weight of iron.

I am a 3rd generation repair plumber and have over 25 years in the business. I can honestly say that Ridgid makes the best wrenches in the business. I have tried them all and none have the holding power and lifespan of Ridgid wrenches. They work and grip in all conditions all the time. I have found wrenches under houses covered in mud and rust, and with a little WD40 and a wire brush brought them back to life and used them the same day with no problems. My father has a 12 in. wrench that has been used for over 25 years, had the handle beaten almost flat, and been used 5+ days a week for those 25 years, and still keeps going. They cost a little more than most, but you only need to buy them once.

As an electrical contractor for over 30 years, we have come to rely upon Ridgid tools and threading equipment. Recently, I sent to Ridgid a couple of very old #31020 that were still working, but needed a bit of TLC and reconditioning. About a week later I received two brand new #31020, no questions asked. Absolutely blown away by the customer service! Awesome.
Oh, and by the way, these are excellent, heavy duty, American made pipe wrenches.

I love that these are made right here in the USA and yet are a good price. Of course the quality is top notch.

It's big, it's heavy, and does what it's supposed to do. I can't see needing to replace it unless I lose it.

I'm not a very knowledgeable plumber, nor someone who does a lot of plumbing. As a homeowner, I have done some and will certainly do more, and pipe wrenches are an essential part of a basic plumbing tool kit, even for many simple finish plumbing jobs. Advice I have found online and gotten from people with whom I work is that the 14" size is the most generally useful, so this is a good first wrench. Or better yet, buy a pair of them if you are assembling threaded pipe. However, Channel lock pliers and vice grips are also quite useful, and in many jobs, more useful than a pipe wrench. Nonetheless, as I said, pipe wrenches are still essential plumbing tools. From experience and advice, I have decided to get 6", 10", and 14". And possibly, if I ever need one, I will also buy an 18". Keep in mind that these WILL leave teeth marks on whatever you are gripping. If this is unnacceptable, you can possibly put something between the jaws and the object (as the cost of a less secure grip).

The main reason I am writing this review, honestly, is to respond to the negative review here questioning whether or not these are still made in the USA. YES, they ARE. And according to a plumber who works at my lab, these are the gold standard for pipe wrenches. They have a lifetime warrantee and the jaws and other parts can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of a whole wrench. I also asked him about aluminum wrenches and he was down on them--thought this line was better (and cheaper).

This is a very well designed and thought out tool, made of the highest quality materials and parts. And it shows. Heavy, yes, but excellent and rugged.

Honestly, I didn't want to buy a pipe wrench, because other than putting in new faucets, I leave the plumbing in my home to the pros. However, the pneumatic cylinder of my office chair recently broke and I was sent a replacement by the manufacturer. I was told to use a pipe wrench to remove the old cylinder. I rolled my eyes and thought to myself, "I'll just use whatever wrench I have in my toolbox and I'll be all set." Well, after wasting about 25 minutes trying to work the cylinder off, I finally gave up and decided to buy a new chair. I'd already put the new chair in my Amazon shopping cart when I decided to take a quick look at the pipe wrenches. After doing some research, I came to the conclusion that the Ridgid was the way to go. I don't buy a lot of tools, but when I do, I like to buy high quality ones, even if I think I'll only need to use it once. So, I decided to spend the few bucks on the Ridgid pipe wrench rather than the nearly $200 for the new office chair I'd selected.

Once I got the wrench, it took me all of 10 seconds to get the cylinder off of my old chair. Another 5 minutes later, I had a perfectly working chair again. Moral of the story is: use the right tool for the job. Oh, and this pipe wrench rocks (as much as a pipe wrench can rock).
