As a novice plumber who bought this tool for home plumbing needs, I'm extremely happy with this tool. It was a life saver, fitting into tight spaces and never failed to make a perfectly clean cut. I would HIGHLY recommend the optional add-on piece that Rigid makes which includes a ratchetind handle that this piece fits into. The pair were worth the weight in gold when working under the house! One of my best tool purchases recently...

SEPT 2013 - UPDATE
This tool has been called upon for two bathroom remodels since the original purchase and my initial review. I am still using the cuter wheel it came with. It continues to be one of the best tool investments bought in recent years.

Don't use it regularly to cut pipe, though. If you need to make many cuts, use the cutter with the large handle. This one will tire your hand and is almos counterproductive to use for many cuts. It's good on single cuts in installed pipes where you don't have enough room to maneuver.

A hacksaw will be easier to use and less tiring than using this cutter. Have some mercy on your wrists.

However, I do recommend it for cutting galvanized pipe, which has a rather thick wall.

I just did a major plumbing overhaul with this little guy, and I was seriously happy I made the purchase, rather than continuing to use a friend's generic, large cutter. In fact, I didn't want to use the larger cutter for any of the cuts, even where I had plenty of room; this was more than satisfactory for all my 1/2" and 3/4" copper plumbing needs.

This came smaller than I expected, was small enough to do everything I needed it to do, and still provided enough leverage. Very nice feel to it because it's very well made.

I have two of these, one for over half inch copper and one for half inch and smaller. This one works fine on half inch (5/8"OD) if you have room to work. I had a slightly cheaper Brand X that has a tendency to spiral on the pipe. It's worth the small difference in price for the Ridgid that doesn't spiral. No idea how long this will last; I only need it a couple of times a year and at that rate it's probably good for a century or two.

I have completely replaced the entire plumbing in my house, and have done plumbing in previous houses. I normally use the house brand of tubing cutter, since that is cheap and works. It was with wonder that I noticed this tool on display at the home depot, with a price 4x the house brand. When I found it at a reasonable price at Amazon I thought I should order it and see why the price difference - this tubing cutter is the King! of tubing cutters - it takes minimal effort to cut the copper tubing - it goes through with ease - and also easily cuts off tiny amounts to shorten the tubing when you made it too long - the house brand just fails when it comes to cutting 1/4 - 3/8" off, but with the Rigid it is no problem. It is a real pleasure to use this tool, and don't waste your money getting the house brand - pay slightly more for a proper tool - you will work more quickly and do a better job, and probably the tool will last longer - many of my house brand tubing cutters have fallen apart due to cheap quality, whereas this tool seems quite sturdy. Thanks again to Amazon!

First, a little background ... I bought this to replace a generic pipe cutter which I bought during an "emergency plumbing situation." Well, I hated that generic pipe cutter with a passion because the section of the tool which holds the cutter wheel was not solidly held by the frame of the tool. As a result of this defect, the cutter would make a nice spiral indentation in the pipe without cutting it. Thumbs down! I fixed it, somewhat, by carefully compressing it in my big bench vice to remove the slack - but it never was quite right. Now as to this cutter... I received until it in similar condition, but not nearly as bad as my generic pipe cutter. I "fixed" it in the same manner - carefully crimping it in my bench vice until there was no slack in the mechanism. I've had some older pipe cutting tools which were much higher fit and finish than this, but they're also large, heavy and would cost a fortune to replace. So, I removed one star for my little peeve, but still rate this as a pretty good tool.

A 'normal' pipe cutter is easier and quicker but that's not to say this is particularly slow or hard. It intended for those close quarters situation where a standard cutter will not fit and this does it great. Ridgid 32975 1/8-Inch to 5/8-Inch Close Quarters Tubing Cutteris slightly smaller if you only need to cut 1/2" pipe max. I had a couple H Depot brand x cutters that tended to spiral and both had the cutter wheel post fail. This product is better constructed and tracked perfectly. I have only made ~20 cuts so far and will update after its well broken in.

Purchased this product so that I could install 3 new bedroom ceiling fans. Had existing conduit that I had to cut into, add on some extension conduit to center of each rooms ceiling. This tool was a dream, it cut perfect ends and no need for a saw. It left no shavings and smooth ends. It made the job that much easier. I would highly recommend this tool. Some other reviewer also recommended the Ridgid 32933 Ratchet Handle for 101 and 118 Close Quarters Cutters and I found it to be a hassle and a waste, ended up not using the handle and tossing it to the side.
