Excellent mandarin album of maturity, May 24, 2000

While some of Jacky Cheung's mandarin albums are, on the whole, a bit more conservative than his cantonese output, this latest mandarin album, which, as the title suggests, celebrates the turn of the millennium, is definitely the most colourful and kaleidoscopic mandarin release that this wonderful singer and song-interpreter has produced to date. Besides those beautiful and heart-felt love songs which have always been Cheung's forte (the melodies for most of these are lovely), there are many other types of songs in this CD including a folk-like ballad accompanied by a solo guitar, a sensuous number which is inspired by jazz standards, up-beat pieces which are teeming with electronic effects, as well as others which are delightfully humorous (which may come as a surprise to many fans). It is evident that considerable attention has been paid to the musical arrangements as well as the writing of the lyrics. Despite the variety in the type of songs here, Cheung is able to handle all of them with expertise, conviction and style. His singing is technically perfect and without contrivance and there is an added sense of maturity in feeling which makes these performances even more communicative. The VCD which accompanies this edition of the CD is an added bonus. A must for fans of Chinese pop.
