Book Description

September 30, 1996
MURDER WASN'T PART OF HER PRACTICE. . . .
Palm Springs veterinarian Andi Pauling is struggling to keep her new business afloat. So when Ross McRoberts appears in her doorway, he seems like an apparition conjured up by her own wishful thinking. A vet school friend who was too sexy for his own good, Ross is Andi's one big regret: He married someone else and moved away.
Yet Ross has changed. On the surface he seems filthly rich, driving a fancy sports car, playing polo, and galloping with a crowd that reeks of luxury. But there's trouble behind the glamour: Ross's beloved horses have become targets of malicious sabotage. And when a popular Argentine player is murdered, Andi the vet turns into Andi the novice sleuth, risking infinitely more than she knows or dreams, including her life. . . .
"Hang on tight and prepare yourself for a flat-out gallop of a book with enough twists and turns to give whiplash."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This first novel is billed as "a Veterinarian Mystery." Most vets don't also play polo, give CPR to an old beau who tried to commit suicide after being accused of murder or become as concerned with the trafficking of thoroughbreds as does Andi Pauling. The action revolves around her clinic in the Southern California desert, and there is too much of it to keep track of easily. However, once readers master overlapping plots and overpopulation of villains (including a violent fringe group of animal-rights activists), the author's good humor and delightful empathy with animals, from a nutty abandoned mutt to hysterical equines, provide an unusual take on the underground horsey set. Gore, especially in medical procedures, coexists with often funny asides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a typical mystery, November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Riding For a Fall (Mass Market Paperback)
I am not a fan of mysteries and I was reluctant to read this book at first. But seeing as how it was not written by a policeman or a former detective but by a VETERINARIAN (me being an animal lover) thought I'd give it a whirl. I am glad I did. This is not a typical whodunnit mystery, it is is more of a thriller with some psychological aspects (this is especially seen in the second book, The Hand That Feeds You). It is definitely fast-paced and keeps you wnating to know more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging mystery in the polo world, March 19, 2003
This review is from: Riding For a Fall (Mass Market Paperback)
A quick reading tale set in Palm Springs. A small animal veterinarian, Andi Pauling is drawn into the polo world by the arrival of old vet school friend Ross McRoberts. McRoberts is the vet with the equine interest and connections, Pauling is the small animal specialist and between them the animal content is quite high and nicely written. Some demonization of fanatic fringe animal activist whackos and a discussion of adult topics of AIDS and homosexuality remind you that the age of innocence is past. This was a satisifying read with well handled horsey elements.
