Grade 2-4-Aspiring cowhands will find plenty of information and many activities packed into this small book. Cowboy clothing, lingo, food, and rodeo events are described in detail, as are other Western customs. Full-color stylized illustrations on every page add appeal. Drinkard includes crafts, games, recipes, and party ideas. Creativity is stimulated: at one point, it is suggested that children use their newfound knowledge to create a play, while at another, they are asked to write a poem. The weakest aspect of the book is the craft instructions. Vague statements, such as "Cut a deeper opening in the back" can cause confusion when there is no diagram. "Enlarge this pattern for gauntlet 200%" may be too difficult for elementary students to figure out. Despite its flaws, this book holds enough interest to merit shelf space, as long as readers have adult help at hand.
