Product Description

Amazon.com Review

In 1989, world-renowned wineglass manufacturer Riedel introduced the Ouverture glass line as a quality, affordable series for enjoying good wine and other beverages. Less expensive that Riedel's crystal, Ouverture makes a good match for the beginning wine connoisseur or the wine lover who needs an everyday set. Machine-made in Austria from premium non-leaded glass, the stemware features thin rims that are cut and polished for ideal flow and direction. Ouverture styling is attractive and well balanced, with designs for 10 different categories of wine and spirits.

This set of four Ouverture beer glasses is a handsome way to serve and drink your favorite ales, ambers, and stouts. They are also excellent for ice water. Crafted with short stems and pedestal bases, the glasses are both graceful and substantial, adding an element of elegance to beer without overdoing it. Safe in the dishwasher, each glass stands 6-3/4 inches high and holds 17-5/8 ounces at full capacity. --Emily Bedard

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beer, June 20, 2009

When we drink beer from a small-rimmed glass or straight from a can or bottle, we miss one of beer's great pleasures - the aroma! In that respect, these glasses fulfill the same function as well-designed wine glasses - allowing the "nose" to spread in the air in the glass above the liquid. That adds a whole new dimension to enjoying a brew. These glasses are plenty big enough. They're not designed to be filled to the brim. A healthy pour from an ordinary bottle or can will build a good head and provide enough room for vaporization. Truly, it raises the flavor profile to a new dimension.

Considering that they're very thin glass, these glasses are durable enough for everyday use if you don't bang them around with abandon. My original set of four lasted about six years before the last one cracked - not bad considering that they were washed in the dishwasher and, before use, put into the freezer for a few minutes to ice them. If you're seriously devoted to enjoying a great beer, these glasses are worth every penny, and make a very thoughtful gift for your beer-drinking friends. (A sure way to become my friend - send me some more Riedel beer glasses!)

4.0 out of 5 stars good water glasses, February 19, 2007

I bought these to go with my Riedel Vinum wine glasses because the Vinum water glass is just too small to be useful. These are just right for a water glass, nice big bowl and a short stem. They have the same cut edge as the Vinum glasses, and you really wouldn't know that they're not crystal by looking at these and the Vinum side-by-side. Note: the box they come in isn't very strong, and the glasses can break in shipping. Amazon replaced my broken glasses with no questions.

Over the years I have had several sets of wine and water glasses. I've treasured the Waterford due to the craftsmanship and cost. But the Riedel glasses add an elegance to the table by virtue of their shape. The thinner lip and specific shape adds to the enjoyment of each type of wine, even beer and water. The only drawback is that the thin glass is more prone to breakage. Gently hand wash these. 5 stars for more formal times; 4 for every day use.
