5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inexpensive - great for beginning oenophiles!
If you're like me, you'd rather put your hard-earned money towards nice wines than on overpriced glassware. However, wine just doesn't taste the same if you drink it out of a plastic cup (yes, I am a college student). These entry-level glasses from Riedel fit the bill perfectly for my needs and are a great value for the price. The nose is enhanced, the taste is more...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Packaging!!!!!!!
While the items arrived in a timely manner, there was absolutely no packaging in the box to protect the wine glasses. Unfortunately, there were broken glasses. I returned them indicating what had happened in transit and they sent out a new set- with no packaging. Once again we had broken glasses.
Did someone actually think four sets of wine glasses would survive a...

The nose is enhanced, the taste is more pronounced, and the overal wine experience is heightened by using a high quality glass like this one. Plus, if one of them accidently gets broken, at [this price per] glass its not a big deal. However, I wouldn't trust the dishwasher with these glasses even though the description says you can. And yes, they are not crystal but they are very close at a fraction of the price. Highly recommended.

I was actually surprised to find that wine *did* taste better from these glasses than what I'd used before. (Hmmm -- not necessarily better; bad wines taste worse, an unanticipated consequence.) In addition, the glasses are simple but pretty without being so expensive that I'm afraid to use them. I'm even willing to put them in the dishwasher, an important consideration for a self-indulgent bachelor. (I did manage to break one, though -- my own fault.) All in all, could hardly have been better.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the little things you'll appreciate, January 21, 2003

I have close to 50 glasses dedicated to alcohol of various types. The REIDEL Ouverture line is one of my favorites. Looking and touching the glass, you notice that the rim is ground and polished and the seams are minimimal, helping the glasses achieve an artistic beauty many glasses try to duplicate, but lack the attention to detail.

But, these are wine glasses not paintings... The lines will accent about any table and the attention to detail and really brings out the smallest subtleties in the wine. Does it really deserve 4 stars, well I'd give it 4.5-4.75, but that's not an option.

Finally Reidel glasses you can put in the dishwasher! We've had these for several months and none have broken yet in the dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars sturdy basics, November 17, 2006

if you're like me, and suddenly need glassware, this is a great choice.

let's say i got a little sauced at a bar with friends, was feeling a bit grand, and decided to invite twelve growling, tattooed, punk hooligans who'd never touched a decent stem over to my house for a somewhat formal dinner. obviously a problematic situation.

would i want something that wouldn't send me into a fit once someone decided to hurl one on the floor as an proclamation? absolutely. would i want to make sure that my smelly, ill-mannered punker friends had a good glass of wine in their calloused paws, and are treated as royalty at least once in their lives? without a doubt.

this is a good, hearty line of glasses for those with both price and quality in mind. rock on.

I bought these glasses for my husband and we both are very happy with them. These are a great value and really do enhance your wine experience. We were so pleased with these that I bought him the white wine set too. Buy these and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent everyday wine glasses, November 23, 2006

I attended an expensive Bordeaux tasting, and the host (a well known, high-end wine retailer) served the wines in this glass. This told me a couple of things: 1. they were very good glasses that even the discerning oenophiles at the tasting would appreciate. 2. they were reasonably priced (to have dozens of them and clearly not care too much if one was accidentally broken). I've bought several sets and only had one broken when a guest dropped it on cement. Although they say dishwasher safe, I still wash them by hand. Although one reviewer complained that they were "chunky", I personally love that they are not the tall, tipsy type of wine glass - those may be great for special occasions, but not for everyday use with a toddler running around the house. I highly recommend these glasses!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but Fragile glasses, March 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Riedel Ouverture Red Wine Glasses, Set of 4 (Kitchen)
These glasses are quite nice- they definitely bring out the best in whatever reds they are served with. Considering the price, it is a bargain. Despite not having been made from crystal, the quality is outstanding for an everyday-use glass. However, be careful when handling these! I had an accident with one of the glasses the first time I used it (actually when washing it). When washing by hand, be extremely careful handling the glasses- one light tap against the sink and it broke. First time this has happened to me- sad to see it break. That's the only thing standing in the way of a 5 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm no expert, April 27, 2007

I was just looking for a beginning set of stemware to replace the menagerie of tasting glasses and department store wine glasses that occupy an entire shelf in my kitchen. These are not large red wine glasses, but they are adequate and could easily double as an all-purpose glass for whites as well. A bit delicate, but I say that in a good way--they're elegant. The glass is thin, rings well and I would have thought it was crystal if I'd had to guess. Very nice...but my next set will be larger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glasses are Great, Shipping not so Great!, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Riedel Ouverture Red Wine Glasses, Set of 4 (Kitchen)
Ridel makes a fine and affordable product. In the 5 or so years I have been an Amazon customer I have never had any problems with Amazon ordering, until ordering this product. This item was a Christmas gift that took three weeks to arrive. I belive the problem was the shipper, the US post office. I have always recived fast and competent service from items delivered by the private carriers, UPS etc. The post office took too long and the condition they treated my package was horrible. They left it on the sidewalk for anyone to take it or break it. I urge Amazon to specify which carrier they will utilize when a customer is selecting shipping specifications, especially in sending crystal steamware!
