Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Handmade of mouth-blown full lead crystal, this wine glass is from Riedel's top-of-the-line Sommeliers collection and is for those who take their wine seriously. Visually impressive, this gigantic glass is on permanent display at New York's Museum of Modern Art for its innovative design, which was developed in 1958. The glass is specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in certain red wines--Burgundy Grand Cru, Barbaresco, Barolo, Beaujolais Grand Cru, Blauburgunder, red Burgundy, Gamay, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Noir--while using the acidity for balance, presenting a three-dimensional flavor. The glass has the unique ability to enhance the taste of an outstanding wine and also to reveal any weaknesses in a lesser quality wine. The large bowl allows room for the wine's rich bouquet to unfold. The flared lip emphasizes the fruitiness of the wine by directing the wine to the front of the palate. The glass weighs a substantial 14 ounces and holds 37 ounces of wine. It stands 9-3/4 inches high with a 4-3/4-inch wide bowl. --Cristina Vaamonde

Product Description

First developed in 1973 by Claus Riedel and the Association of Italian Sommeliers, this collection consisted of 10 sizes. Since that time new wines and wine-producing regions have taken the world by storm. So the series was developed further by Claus's son Georg, into an all-embracing state of the art wine glass collection. Praised in 1991 by Robert Parker Jr. publisher of The Wine Advocate, as "the finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make." Thanks to world demand, Sommeliers is now the wineglass benchmark and the most successful series of hand-made glasses in the world. Each glass is individually made: the upper parts are blown into a mould, the stem and base are hand-crafted using methods developed at the time of Christ's birth. Our glass-makers invest their talent, know-how and meticulous craftsmanship in making glasses of the impeccable quality our customers expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific wine glass for the serious wine drinker, November 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru, Single Stem (Kitchen)
this is the top of the line when it comes to wine glasses. it's the perfect gift for someone who loves wine, especially complex red wines.

there is a smaller version (the mini) but i recommend this slightly larger version due to both its aesthetic appeal and its functionality. it is the way that good red wines were meant to be enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Wine glass for the Best taste!, December 27, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru, Single Stem (Kitchen)
Contrary to popular belief- we really "taste" with our noses and not with our tongues. Tasting involves the tongue to a very minor extent (taste buds only detect sweet, sour, bitter, and salty). All the other favors or sensations are detected by the nose--the only time most people notice this is when they have a bad cold and stuffy nose--then nothing "taste" good.

Therefore- you want a wine glass that can let the aroma linger, so you can get a good whiff.

In addition the thickness and curvature of the glass somehow alters your "taste" ... I'm not sure why ... but I think many people would agree that some drinks taste better out of the bottle under certain situations...like soda or beer on a hot day.

Therefore- you want a wine glass that is thin and has a curvature that you like. Unfortunately, a thin handsome wine glass is also easy to break. I have already broken a few...one an expensive Riedel Champagne glass.

In conclusion: This is my favorite wine glass for good red aromatic wines.

1.0 out of 5 stars No longer best in the wold, April 24, 2009
This review is from: Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru, Single Stem (Kitchen)
Somewhat disappointed with the new Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru, Single Stem.
I believe quality has dropped a lot from the legendary Riedel manufacture.
This is not the first time that I am replacing single stem of the Riedel product.
The original was purchased about five years ago and they were perfect. I bought them right here at Amazon.
The new one is not as tall as the original and has some imperfections in the bottom of the glass. I am not sure how this high-end wine glass pass their quality control. Perhaps, it is no longer available.

I for one will look for alternative next time around.
