4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but fragile, January 16, 2007

I have owned Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glasses for a decade and love them for their size, shape, clarity, and elegance. However, I have stopped purchasing them. Why? All one needs to do is look at them firmly and they break. My wife and I finally made a rule never to wash them after drinking any amount of wine. Then we escalated to not washing them if we were tired or distracted. Finally, we solved this ongoing problem by purchasing Spiegelau Vino Grande Red Wine Glasses recommended by a friend. At initial evaluation they look virtually identical to the Riedels, but on closer inspection are slightly thicker although an almost perfect match in shape. The feel is similarly elegant. The Reidels have been moved to the back of the cupboard. After breaking 3 or 4 Reidels per year, we have not broken a single similar Spiegelau in 2 years.

Worth the price. While not "unbreakable", the design does enhance the taste of a good red by openning up the wine. Why invbest in decent wine and drink it out of the wrong glass? Why bother?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine wine belongs in a fine glass, February 13, 2011

I've been using Riedel vinum glasses for a number of years now, and wouldn't consider any other brand.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that anyone can tell the difference between wine served in a Riedel glass compared to a plastic cup. However, I think a beautiful, well made glass adds to the experience of enjoying a fine wine. These glasses will make it clear to your guests that you're pouring the good stuff!

I purchased this set of two glasses to replace two that I broke. I've since learned the trick to not breaking them is to avoid twisting the stem/base while drying the glass. The joint between the stem and the glass is the weakest part, and twisting will put too much torque on this point.

This wine glasses are separate from the pack because their design, quality of the crystal and feeling. For a bourdeaux or a cavernet, there is nothing like a good transparency, a nice design that lead the bouquet rigth into your nose and the correct weight feeling.
If you are a wine collector, chances are that you already own one of these glasses, but if you dont, get some!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Daily Drinking Glass, December 1, 2011

I refuse to consume my wines from anything but a proper glass. If I am ging to a restaurant and I know that they have improper stemware I am the guy that will shamelessly bring his own.

That said this is an excellent daily drinking glass for most red varietals, especially bordeaux varietals. The bowl is of a good size, and although I wash mine by hand to maintain longevity you can toss these in the dishwasher.

If you are looking for a fine glass that you can enjoy daily this is it. For those new to Riedel stemware this is where I suggest you start your collection.
