4.0 out of 5 stars Great glasses, August 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Riedel H2O Whiskey/Double-Old Fashioned Glass, Set of 2 (Kitchen)
These are great looking glasses that are also very functional. They are very easy to hold. The one gripe I have is that they feel too delicate. I have not broken any yet but when adding ice I think it should be done with extreme care. Overall a great glass and has held up in the dishwasher just fine.

The simplicity and beautifully classic lines of these glasses make them very attractive and they have a classy appearance. They seem rather delicate, but have held up to use very well so far. The lead-free crystal ensures that the glasses do not have even the slightest imperfection, and the walls of the glass blend seamlessly into the base making the overall impression very elegant.

I've only used the glasses a few times so far, so I'm not sure about their longevity, and the mixed reviews here about their durability leave me mildly concerned about how long they will last.

I use them primarily for drinking single malt on the rocks and they serve the purpose admirably. The size is perfect for a double shot of scotch over a nice stack of ice. I like them enough to get more to create a nice set, but the price point is a slight deterrent to getting more right now. However, I expect I will get more as soon as an opportunity arises.

I recommend them very highly. I hope you found this review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, December 5, 2009
This review is from: Riedel H2O Whiskey/Double-Old Fashioned Glass, Set of 2 (Kitchen)
These really are remarkable glasses. The way they feel in my hand is what sets them apart from all other glasses--the glass itself is so remarkably thin, that the act of drinking becomes focused more on the drink than on the glass. They are so clear and so simple, you can't help looking at them. Watching ice melt becomes its own pastime. In three years of regular use (including raucous parties and rough dishwasher loadings), the only glass I've broken was inadvertently knocked from my upstairs balcony onto the concrete patio below. This is an excellent glass!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great whiskey glasses, May 7, 2008

For drinking whiskey on the rocks, there is no better glass. The thinness of the glass enhances the flavor of the bourbon or scotch served in them.
Because they are thin, they need to be handled carefully when cleaning or filling with ice. I have broken several but consider that to be par for the course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice while they last, February 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Riedel H2O Whiskey/Double-Old Fashioned Glass, Set of 2 (Kitchen)
Most double old-fashioned glasses have a weighty bottom and sturdy feel. With these glasses, Riedel (pronounced Reedal)has taken the opposite approach, with mixed results.

On the plus side is the purity and simplicity of the glass design, and the superb thinness of the crystal. The glass is so light in the hand that it feels like you're holding scotch (or in my case vodka) on the rocks without the glass; it's almost as if the glass were invisible to the touch as well as to the sight. It's a very pleasant, elegant experience and it makes drinking extremely enjoyable.

On the minus side, these glasses should have been made of lead crystal; they aren't. I know, I know: lead, agh! But lead gives crystal as thin as this much-needed strength. These non-lead crystal glasses are so fragile it's difficult to imagine them lasting very long before they chip or crack. In fact, one of the pair I purchased from Amazon had flea bites in the rim still in the box. This was neither Amazon's fault nor UPS's. That's how the folks at Riedel packed them.

To buy these glasses, then, is a commitment to caring for them. They are much too fragile for a dishwasher. Not only must they be washed by hand, but you need to pay full attention to the glasses as you're washing them. Even slightly too much pressure with a dish-washing sponge is capable of cracking or shattering them. As for tiny chips forming on the glass rims, there's no protection against those.

The bottom line: These glasses feature a pure simple design; they are made of fine, thin, non-lead crystal; they're a pleasure to drink from; and the have provenance: the Riedel name is second to none when it comes to fine crystal.

They are also extremely fragile. If you're the type of person who rarely breaks a glass (hey, they exist), you might give these very nice, inexpensive glasses a try. But if you do break the odd glass, these fragile glasses are accidents waiting to happen. Expect to have to replace them often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but feel fragile, November 2, 2010

Love drinking my scotch out of these glasses. The ultra-thin lip adds to the experience, but the glass sure feels fragile, and I'm always conscious not to grip it too tightly. It's probably stronger than it feels, but better safe than sorry. Would purchase again for the price.

These glasses are simple and great to use.

Dishwasher safe and contemporary.

I never give anything 5 stars unless I get a backrub with it.
