Bass and Drums,
By "boardpunk" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rien a voir, rien a boire (Nothing to see, nothing to drink) (Audio CD)
Impressive, simple but a sound all of its own, Nous Subterfuge's music gets straight to the point and is cleverly varied with pieces that alternate between calm to anger, rage and soothingness. One could compare them to NoMeansNo, but they are more modest and describe their style as experimental-jazz punk; still, Nous Subterfuge is difficult to pigeonhole. Inspired by the dexterity of jazz and the energy of punk/hard-core, it thumbs its nose at the generally accepted idea that drums just accompany the rest of the group while the bass is there to support the rhythm. With Nous Subterfuge, the impassioned drums transfix the audience with their beat and the bass finishes them off with melancholy or violent melodies that float through the hall; together, their anguished sequences electrify and intoxicate their listeners.
