After making a notable appearance in the 1989 film 'Lean On Me,' Riff went on to release their debut album in early 1991. Their first single, "My Heart Is Failing Me" was, and still is a sparkling midtempo ballad that definitely foreshadowed relatively recent boyband creations like "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely" by the Backstreet Boys and "This I Promise You," by Nsync. However, Riff is probably most fondly remembered for "If You're Serious," another ballad that defined the summer of 1991 along with Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up." The final single from this album was a remix of "Every Time My Heart Beats," an uptempo that is so peppy, it's hard not to smile when listening to it. If you enjoyed Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step," you'll probably be able to get into this one too. Especially if you can get a hold of the long-out-of-print single version.
The rest of this album is a consistent listen. The ballads "I Can't Believe We Just Met," "Little Girls," and "Read My Eyes" are as sugary sweet as a delicious ice cream sundae topped with all of your favorite dressings - and I do not exaggerate. "Baby It's Wonderful" has a more sophisticated sound than the others -- kind of like drinking fine wine on a balcony with the one you're interested in on a warm and balmy summer night.
There are some goofy moments: "Temporary Insanity," has a zany, Boyz II Men-ish vibe (with bass vocals and doo-wop motifs), and "April's Fool" is an uptempo about a cheating girlfriend. But overall, I cannot recommend this album enough for New Jack Swing enthusiasts who liked the more pop/R&B side of it. Nsync's JC Chasez made it a point to mention that Riff was one of his primary influences while a Mouseketeer before going on to superstardom during the Cheiron Pop Era of 1998-2001.

I got the chance to see Riff in concert back in 1991 and they put on a great show. I got this CD in 1995 mainly for 1 song "My Heart Is Failing Me" and I can't say enough good things about the whole CD. That one song is worth the CD. I love the harmony and the talent, and it is a shame that true talent like Riff and also groups like Shai are not popular today.

During the early 90's it wasn't all that uncommon to find flocks of boy bands out their releasing similarly themed new jack swing based recordings. There was Boyz II Men of course,Silk,Shai,Solo,Intro,(to a degree) All 4 One and then there was Riff-one of the more unsung of these bands despite an appearance in the film Lean on Me. This band never had a long lived career, produced a break out solo star/producer and didn't survive much after the new-jack swing era was over. Now that didn't necessarily mean they lacked distinction. At the time records like this were coming out I by and large gave them the slip because in terms of what was being heard on the radio at the time it seemed like all I was really ALLOWED to hear was one new-jack based boyband after another. It just became a case of over saturation and considering what a similar sound many of them did have and how often these albums are now found in budget bins it kind of goes without saying. All the same people of the opinion as myself did miss out on a lot because there were some wonderful aspects to this genre if you searched deep enough. Even on the more uptempo material such as "Everytime My Heart Beats",the mildly noveltyish "Temporary Insanity" and the warm closer "April's Fool" Riff emmediately stand out mainly for one reason: NONE of the group members really do dominate the spotlight at all. The members of this quintet all remain generally locked in a tight five part harmony that recalls sweet soul groups of the 60's and 70's such as The Chi-Lites and The Stylisitics, although the whispy highness of their voices never reach the same passion and range of a Russell Tompkins or Eugene Record.Read more ›

Wow, this is a great cd! Loads of fun, great songs with not a bad track on the disc. If you like the New Jack Swing sound, especially artists like Guy, Troop, Johnny Gill, etc. and are eager to find other great albums that are a good example of this music style, I urge you to try this Riff album. It's great, that's all I've got to say!
