Editorial Reviews

There is astonishingly little overlap between this 26-song collection, consisting of songs from various western movie and television soundtracks, and other, rival domestic releases. As usual, Bear Family has done its best to gather together the best and most unusual of this material -- a promotional-only single of Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin singing "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" from Rio Bravo (adapted by Dimitri Tiomkin from the title theme from a score he wrote for an earlier John Wayne/Howard Hawks movie, Red River); Merle Kilgore (sounding a lot like Tex Ritter) doing the title song from Nevada Smith; "The Legend of Shenandoah" by James Stewart, telling the plot of the film while a chorus sings the title tune, as a sort of audio trailer for the movie Shenandoah (more of an eastern than a western); the Sons of the Pioneers doing the title theme from The Searchers; Marty Robbins' version of "The Ballad of the Alamo"; Tex Ritter's second (and best) recording of "High Noon"; and the Sons of the Pioneers performing "Song of the Wagonmaster" and "Wagons West" from Wagonmaster; Roy Rogers singing "The Yellow Rose of Texas" (to an utterly unfamiliar melody); Johnny Cash's "The Sons of Katie Elder" (a soundtrack never reissued on CD); and the only CD release of Dean Martin's "Rio Bravo." There are no notes, but everything else is first-rate about this disc. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars JOHN WAYNE THEMES, August 3, 2000

This review is from: My Rifle, My Pony and Me (Western Movies Songs) (Audio CD)
This CD is a must-have for anyone who considers themselves a Duke fan. I loved the brief intro by John Wayne to the title track and was surprised to hear the exact rendition of the song as in the movie. Other classics include The Alamo, Searchers, Sons of Katie Elder, etc. Not to be ignored are some good television themes (Palladin) and some unintentionally humorous songs (Lorne Greene sings "Bonanza"). I also thoroughly enjoy the Sons of the Pioneers with Roy Rogers. All in all, a very fun CD for playing on a Friday afternoon at work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the yesteryear, February 23, 2006

When I saw the title, I immediately recalled the Ricky Nelson - Dean Martin duet in "Rio Bravo" as they were held up in the sheriff's office with trusty Walter Brennan and you know who, John Wayne. This CD brings back many, many memories, when Westerns were King of the small or silver screen.

Whether it's Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska" or Marty Robbin's "Ballad of the Alamo", you can sit back and hear Frankie Laine's "Rawhide" and "Gunfight At O.K. Corral". Too many to mention them all, but Johnny Cash, Lorne Greene, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, and a dozen more add to the 'best of the West' in this tv/movie collection of soundtracks and theme songs, you'll be sure to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite, September 20, 2005
By
This review is from: My Rifle, My Pony and Me (Western Movies Songs) (Audio CD)
This is a great CD for the old western lovers. My family made a game out of the first playing of it by having to guess the name of the song and who was singing it. (One person had control of the jewel case.) What was so great about it was there was nary a cuss word or drug use in it. Very family friendly.
