3.0 out of 5 stars The Rifleman Volume 5:, September 2, 2002
This review is from: The Rifleman (Vol. 5) (DVD)
Chuck Connors is Lucas McCain, also known in some parts as "The Rifleman". McCain lives on a small ranch outside of the town of North Fork, New Mexico, with his son Mark (Johnny Crawford). His good friend is Marshal Micah Torrance (Paul Fix). This is the fifth collection of their adventures. Here are summaries and/or comments for the episodes in this set. Episode ratings are on a scale from one to five (best).

The Boarding House: (4)
Escaping one's past is the theme of this story. Katy Jurado stars as "Julia", the proprietress of a boarding house. In the past, she had been a crooked card dealer, cheating one of McCain's friends. Lucas learns the lesson of forgiveness, and defends Julia, when a band of her ex-associates roll into town looking to setup a gambling operation there. An interesting character study.

The Brother-In-Law: (3)
Another moral dilemma for Lucas, and this time it is very personal, when the bother of his late wife arrives in North Fork. The trouble is, the ex-rodeo rider, and Mark McCain's new hero, is wanted for robbery. Lucas must get his brother-in-law to face justice, without breaking Mark's heart.

The Bullet: (4)
Some creative license with history is taken here. Lucas runs into trouble away from home, when he crosses the path of Mr. Griff (Richard Anderson), the owner of a gambling establishment, who is accustomed to doing things his way. Seeking justice, Lucas turns to the local Marshal (Harold J. Stone) for help, and is seething after discovering that a friend of his has been murdered. While apparently uninterested, the Marshal is actually quite progressive, dabbling in the infant science of ballistics, discovering evidence leading to a killer.

Dead Cold Cash: (3)
The widow of a man Lucas killed while committing a crime, vows to take revenge on McCain. After her death, her will is read before the entire town. A sum of $100,000 will be divided among the all the townspeople, if Lucas McCain is dead within seven days. Will greed motivate someone to commit murder? Lucas had better watch his back, especially when a stranger arrives in town.

The Hero: (3)
Robert Culp, gueststars as Colly Vain, a man who happens upon an outlaw, the Domino Kid, and shoots him in the back, as he is going for his gun. Bringing the dead man into town to claim a thousand dollar reward, Colly finds that the town's people don't appreciate the "cowardly" manner in which the Domino Kid was killed. Intending to leave town after collecting the reward, Colly's problems get worse, when three of the Domino Kid's friends ride into town intent on revenge.

Volume 5 feature more of the rough, tough, frontier justice that you expect from this half hour drama. The episodes are good, but none of them is outstanding. This collection may be more for fans of the program. This DVD is also part of the four DVD Rifleman Boxed Collection 2, which contains Volumes 5 through 8.
