5.0 out of 5 stars Up the RA!, February 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rifles of the I.R.A. (Audio CD)
From the first strains of Slievenamon through to the end of Uncle Nobby's Steamboat, this CD is the best Irish Rebel Music I think I've ever heard. In Garran Na Bhile is great Gaelic music, and Sweet Carnlough Bay is just what it says it is: sweet. You'll cry for Sean Tracy, cheer for A Row in the Town, and both for God Save Ireland.

The Tones "Rifles of the IRA" raises the hair on the back of my neck. All Lads and lasses who believe in a one free Ireland have this and "Songs of the revolution" by the Clancy Brothers in their revolutionary record (CD) collection. If I didn't have to share my wealth with the Brotherhood, I'd replace all my albums with Wolfe Tone CD's!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest, May 18, 2011

First saw the Wolfetones in 1971 in Dublin. Bought this record, and had to go through customs into the UK - some dirty looks! This is rebel music, stirring, patriotic. I'm glad I can buy the digital version - my record is long gone.

By its very nature, folk music is an overt expression of socio-political reality, both past and present, as witnessed, experienced and perceived by the performing artist(s). Consequently, one's knowledge of history, culture, and politics, combined with unique personal experiences, will inherently influence the manner in which any type of folk music is analyzed and accepted. This, of course, is why any given single piece of music can invoke a myriad of powerful emotions, opinions and debate.

The extremely talented Wolfe Tones have done a tremendous job of expressing the soul-draining pain and sorrow brought about by years of brutal British oppression; they break through the wall of apathy with an intense and blatant desire for freedom; and they are passionately proud of their love of God and country. They are indeed rebels with a cause. I find their music stirring, thought-provoking and powerful. It's also gentle and soothing to the spirit.

Rifles of the I.R.A. is, in my opinion, a great CD and a must-have for anyone who enjoys the finest in folk music.
