Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is radically different from run-of-the-mill baby name books. It is not focused on just giving you long lists of names (although it contains hundreds of names, many with historic name trend data), it gives you a scientific framework for discovering and evaluating your own favorites.

Beautifully illustrated in color throughout the entire book, this is the must-have name resource for modern parents.

The book is a perfect gift for baby showers, baby gift baskets, and other gift occasions. If your budget allows, this is ideally combined with the "The Right Baby Name Gift Card", also available at Amazon.com.

About the Author

Dr. Oliver Tavakol was born into a family of physicians; in fact, for 300-years this tradition has been handed down from father to son. No sur-prise, then, that he too studied medicine, at Germany's top-ranking medical institution, the Ludwig-Maximillians-University in Munich and the Klinikum Grosshadern.
He paid his way through medical school partly with a merit-based scholarship, and partly with the revenues from an IT startup he founded and led during this time. Dr. Tavakol also studied the nature of the world, as well as people and why they act the way they do, and pursued a Master's Degree in philosophy. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Jesuit College for Philosophy in Munich, Germany, with a focus in ontology and epistemology, the branches of philosophy that investigate the nature of being, and the origin and limits of human knowledge, respectively.
Following medical school, he worked 30-hour shifts as a medical intern but soon decided to put his training to use on a broader basis. He joined one of the world s most prestigious and influential management consulting firms, and helped to shape healthcare policy in Germany and to improve hospital efficiency in the US. At the time of this writing, he is a junior partner in the firm s New York office.
Right now, Dr. Tavakol and his wife of 13 years, Bita, are expecting their first child. This, of course, is why this book exists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different way to look at picking a name for your baby, April 26, 2007
This review is from: The Right Baby Name: The Scientific Guide to Naming Your Baby (Perfect Paperback)
This book was a real eye-opener to me. I was aware that picking a name for my child was not going to be an easy task but most of the issues dealt with in this book I wouldn't even have thought about. I mean, who would have known that the vowels in the name make a difference, for example?

The book is based on sound data but still an easy read with lots of examples to clarify what the author meant. The clear structure lets you jump right to the topics that you are after and there are "tutorial" boxes which help put the advice into practice.

The affiliated webpage [...]the last insecurities in decision making for a name. Nicely done, easy to use and very informative.

Will definitely get this for my friends' baby showers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best baby name book on the market, April 26, 2007

This review is from: The Right Baby Name: The Scientific Guide to Naming Your Baby (Perfect Paperback)
This is without a doubt the best baby name book that my wife and I have read. It summarizes centuries of research in an easy to read 100 pg book.

If you are hungry for more research, the author has also started his own website where you can do further research on names that you might like, including finding out if your name of choice has become a recent fad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, May 18, 2007

This review is from: The Right Baby Name: The Scientific Guide to Naming Your Baby (Perfect Paperback)
The book has intrigued me - there is more to a name than meets the eye, and certainly more than I imagined. I originally bought this book because I thought it is a quick read with a bit over 100 pages but it [...] right in. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a "left brain" approach to finding the right name. The author must be obsessed with naming his baby because of all the research he has done. I haven't found anything that comes close to it.

The book explains all the background on names very well but doesn't have too many examples - I will try out their service as well which they sell as a gift card (The Right Baby Name Gift Card). It is a bit pricey but then you name your baby only once.
