5.0 out of 5 stars LBDA with impressive freshman effort, December 12, 1999

When I first picked up this album, I figured it was gonna pretty much suck. Being a die-hard Sublime fan, I felt obligated to buy it and at least give it a try. Suffice to say, I was blown away and completley laid out. LBDAS has created their own style of reggae music on this album, while keeping it real with sublime-like beats. I enjoy Trailer-ras, kick down, Sensi, and Rosarito to name a few but my favorite song on this album is My Own Life. Opie can sing! Who knew? Any Sublime fan should enjoy this album, if you don't, well then maybe you weren't a sublime fan to begin with? R.I.P. BRADLEY NOWELL

4.0 out of 5 stars moving on, June 21, 2004

the band that was sublime is no more. these cats need to stop expecting long beach to be sublime- which is utterly hopeless. it is just different with brad gone. as much as we all miss him and wish he were here creating wonderful music, his passing must be accepted. long beach, as far as i know, doesn't claim to be sublime. it's evident in their music. they have progressed and really are still an excellent group. you can't hold them responsible for brad or hold them to that musical style. you can still feel a little of the old sublime with long beach, but they obviously will never be the same. well, enough about the past...right back is a really solid album. i really enjoy this album for what it is as any one must do. you will not like it if you can't accept that it's a new band, so be open minded. A must have for any collection and i find it to be extrordinarily good in the summer time

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Awesome Bands to Come Out of Long Beach Ever, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Right Back (Audio CD)
The Long Beach Dub Allstars are not Sublime, nor should they be compared to them. Sure, they contain two members of Sublime, come from Long Beach, and mix styles such as ska, punk, and reggae. But that's where the similarities end. The Dub Allstars also add in jazz and dub, two things Sublime did not use a lot. They also include seven official members, whereas Sublime had three. The Dub Allstars have a saxophonist, a DJ, and multi-percussionists. They seem to effortlessly mix the styles of Caribbean reggae, African rythmns, and Southern California punk. They are fronted by Opie Ortiz, who has a strangely Bradley Nowell-esque voice, but he also has a more Jamaican vibe that makes the music that more enjoyable. As far as the songs go, they are all expertly written, especially Trailer Ras, which has a great feel to it. My personal favorites on this CD besides it are New Sun, My Own Life, Fugazi, Saw Red (She's Mine), and Rosarito. This is a perfect CD in all aspects, and it really captures the feel of Sublime in a whole different additude. It seems the band have allowed themselves to just let go and give themselves free control of their instrument. This results in free layed back singing, wild saxophone solos, and great bass licks. When I first heard of this fairly large band, I figured that a seven piece is usually a bad idea, with sound coming from all directions. But after listening, I now compare this band to an orchestra or a jazz combo, where large numbers is a good idea. I have a five disc changer, and this is almost always in it. Amazing stuff. For fans of Sublime and Slightly Stoopid.
