LBDA with impressive freshman effort,
By josh (Connecticut, formally Alaska) - See all my reviews

When I first picked up this album, I figured it was gonna pretty much suck. Being a die-hard Sublime fan, I felt obligated to buy it and at least give it a try. Suffice to say, I was blown away and completley laid out. LBDAS has created their own style of reggae music on this album, while keeping it real with sublime-like beats. I enjoy Trailer-ras, kick down, Sensi, and Rosarito to name a few but my favorite song on this album is My Own Life. Opie can sing! Who knew? Any Sublime fan should enjoy this album, if you don't, well then maybe you weren't a sublime fan to begin with? R.I.P. BRADLEY NOWELL

the band that was sublime is no more. these cats need to stop expecting long beach to be sublime- which is utterly hopeless. it is just different with brad gone. as much as we all miss him and wish he were here creating wonderful music, his passing must be accepted. long beach, as far as i know, doesn't claim to be sublime. it's evident in their music. they have progressed and really are still an excellent group. you can't hold them responsible for brad or hold them to that musical style. you can still feel a little of the old sublime with long beach, but they obviously will never be the same. well, enough about the past...right back is a really solid album. i really enjoy this album for what it is as any one must do. you will not like it if you can't accept that it's a new band, so be open minded. A must have for any collection and i find it to be extrordinarily good in the summer time

One of the Most Awesome Bands to Come Out of Long Beach Ever,
This review is from: Right Back (Audio CD)
The Long Beach Dub Allstars are not Sublime, nor should they be compared to them. Sure, they contain two members of Sublime, come from Long Beach, and mix styles such as ska, punk, and reggae. But that's where the similarities end. The Dub Allstars also add in jazz and dub, two things Sublime did not use a lot. They also include seven official members, whereas Sublime had three. The Dub Allstars have a saxophonist, a DJ, and multi-percussionists. They seem to effortlessly mix the styles of Caribbean reggae, African rythmns, and Southern California punk. They are fronted by Opie Ortiz, who has a strangely Bradley Nowell-esque voice, but he also has a more Jamaican vibe that makes the music that more enjoyable. As far as the songs go, they are all expertly written, especially Trailer Ras, which has a great feel to it. My personal favorites on this CD besides it are New Sun, My Own Life, Fugazi, Saw Red (She's Mine), and Rosarito. This is a perfect CD in all aspects, and it really captures the feel of Sublime in a whole different additude. It seems the band have allowed themselves to just let go and give themselves free control of their instrument. This results in free layed back singing, wild saxophone solos, and great bass licks. When I first heard of this fairly large band, I figured that a seven piece is usually a bad idea, with sound coming from all directions. But after listening, I now compare this band to an orchestra or a jazz combo, where large numbers is a good idea. I have a five disc changer, and this is almost always in it. Amazing stuff. For fans of Sublime and Slightly Stoopid.

Hey, all i've got to say is "they've done it again", sublime has had a major impact on a lot of things in my life...and when i heard of LBDAS i didn't believe they would be as good, but boy was i wrong. After seeing them live in concert we bonded through favorites of sublime and some new stuff too. I was so impressed i went out and bought this CD. My CD is already scratched up from the play time. BRADLEY WOULD BE PROUD

To begin with - if you're so closed-minded that you cannot accept this cd because it's different than sublime, then phooey on you. Of course Opie and Ras don't sound like Brad - who does? The man had one of the most soulful, raw, unpolished voices ever in american music. But Bradley's gone, and I'd rather hear new stuff from the remaining members than rereleases of rereleases ad infinitum. That being said, this is a great album! A little lighter on the punk than Sublime, but the rhythm section, always expertly anchored by Bud and Eric, is actually more polished than ever. This album is so bright and toe-tappable - it's ideal for driving down the highway, windows open, on a sunny blue-sky day. Long live so-cal reggae/punk/dub/rap/rock soul.

RIGHT BACK where Sublime left off...,

Anyone that even mildly enjoys the works of Sublime needs to pick this album up. Along with the remaining members of Sublime, opie, ras1, a mixture of horns and keyboards, and a host of guest MC's, LBDA is everything that is good about music. Don't even try to slap a label on this band, because as soon as you try to fit this band into one genre, the next song will be on and they'll hit you with a totally different sound. There isnt a single song on this cd that isnt worth putting on repeat for about 2 hours. Musically, they have so much skill and depth that you can literally hear the same song a hundred times without ever getting bored. If you don't buy this cd, you're crazy. flat out. punk, ska, reggae, whatever....this is just great music. bradley nowell would be proud!

Good, but not great,

Cool album altogether, great photo on the back of the cd. Although no band'll ever be like Sublime, and i'll admit i bought this cd and compared it right off the bat with sublime, you just can't do that. It's unfair. This album is hip in it's own way, with some groovy tracks like Rosarito and Trailer Ras. Very mood-oriented music. it's definitely a fresh re-birth of the SoCal music style. I think it'd be good to listen to while driving or just kickin' it. All in all a good cd. Peace.

Some say that this album is lacking because "the great voice is gone". They are obviously not Sublime, which makes this CD even better. I say "even better" not criticize or even compare. I say this because it is multiple genres of music, brought together to make a new genre. These different genres might have influence them to produce Sublime. Some people say that "The only thing they lack is the voice and songwriting of Brad Nowell. Ras-1 obviously cannot fill his vacancy, guitar, voice or presence-wise." That's cool to say but, they aren't trying to fill anyone's shoes. They have moved on and are still great musicians. I am glad to see that everyone didn't just go their own way. We are blessed that these people can obviously jam some funky as beats, that make you want to bob you head, and burn one down. The added elements of the woods and brass give this CD multi-dimensional depth. Also the drum beats, DJ scratching, multiple vocals adds great flavor. Sounds good to me.

Right Back with more great music,

I love Sublime, as a matter of fact 40oz to Freedom is one of my all time favorite CD's, but people have to stop comparing the Allstars to Sublime. True Brad (R.I.P.) is no longer there, but Eric, Bud and the rest of the crew are still turning out great smokin' music. Songs such as "Sensi" are heavy reggae and there is nothing wrong with that. The Allstars are the next best thing. Give 'em a chance.
