More About the Author

Tom is MisterNumbers on Youtube with over a million views of his animated and instructional math videos.
Tom is also the Founder of Pattern Play Math, a right brain approach to math that plays with the fun and amazing simple patterns in numbers. Kids, teachers, and parents get fascinated with the easy patterns and learning math becomes a positive and effective way to learn addition, the times tables, and lots of math concepts. Free math teaching is available on his Youtube videos. More help and worksheets are in his books and DVDs.
Tom has presented in schools and to Math Teacher conventions. He has filmed 4 television shows of "PATTERN PLAY MATH" which are in editing and more are planned. He also holds trainings for teachers and parents in Santa Barbara CA. He is setting up SKYPE instructions with International Education Institutions, as well as some U.S. groups. Contact him toll-free at 1-888-DIG_MATH (888-344-6284) for Santa Barbara or Skype trainings.
He is a semi-retired teacher who taught an advanced math course. He then taught test preparation for Math and English, and saw that many students have a negative attitude about math that kept them from learning. Since he was convinced that numbers are interesting, his focus was on getting students curious about numbers. He had no intention of creating a math teaching system. This fun, right-brain approach is the result of working with individual students. He also has a Masters in Counseling, which helped him to be attentive to how students can change their outlook on Math.

Finally, a book written for right brained thinkers! Studies have shown that math is the most difficult subject for people to learn. It's one of the main reasons students fail or drop out of college or even high school. This is especially true if you're a creative person. You may excel at writing, reading, music, or other right brained subjects but math is a constant struggle.

In Right Brain Math: A Fun, Easy, Visual Approach to Math the author makes learning basic math fun and easy by using a visual approach. Getting kids to memorize multiplication tables and other math problems isn't really learning, it's just memorizing. But when they can SEE the patterns it all makes sense. Once they have a solid foundation in the basics it makes learning higher math much easier.

I wish this book had been written decades ago when I was in school or even when I was home schooling my kids. I'm just glad it's finally available. I'll certainly recommend it to others and use it with my grand kids when I have them. :)

I like this innovative way to use patterns to answer multiplication problems. I only wish a more advanced book could be created as well. My kids found it to be neat but they ran through it too fast because they are older 10 - 13. If younger children use this method, it will benefit them really well.

Math has always been a subject people dread and have a difficult time with, and for kids this could be a constant struggle. Thomas Biesanz has taken a different approach that makes it simple, easy, fun and even entertaining for kids that they will even start to enjoy learning math. He uses a creative visual method where kids memorize what they see "Patterns" and apply them to math problems, times tables, etc. This method has proven to be highly effective and benefits kids in the learning process.

I have found this is a great alternative for students that struggle with rote memory of their facts, visual learners in particular.
