5.0 out of 5 stars Great for family devotions with very young children.

2.0 out of 5 stars look somewhere else for character lessons
I bought this because it was part of a Sonlight (homeschooling) core curriculum. I was looking for a Christian character lesson/devotional type of book, but I am not impressed with this book. Looking through it, I think we will be able to use about half the "lessons" which is why I am giving this 2 stars. The language in this book is very dated and not very useful,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Right Choices, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Right Choices (Hardcover)
I teach a Bible class to preschoolers and I purchased this book as a guide for my "how to be good lessons," which I use in conjuction with the Bible lessons. I start each lesson with a "how to be good lesson" found in Right Choices and then proceed to the Bible lesson. The structure of the book is great - one subject per story, simple questions to ask the children, a prayer and a scripture. The children grasp the concepts and are quickly learning the basics of how God would have us live.

2.0 out of 5 stars look somewhere else for character lessons, June 15, 2006
This review is from: Right Choices (Hardcover)
I bought this because it was part of a Sonlight (homeschooling) core curriculum. I was looking for a Christian character lesson/devotional type of book, but I am not impressed with this book. Looking through it, I think we will be able to use about half the "lessons" which is why I am giving this 2 stars. The language in this book is very dated and not very useful, emphasizing words like "naughty" and "nice". I noticed several pages that seemed to be more about proper social behavior than what I would consider morally "right" or "wrong". An example of this is "being polite by saying please and thank you"; telling someone "it's okay" when they apologize, rather than saying "I forgive you" or talking about what forgiveness means. There is a page on why parents must spank children (in the example given it is because the young child took cleaning supplies with a skull and crossbones marked on them, out of a low cabinet in the picture). There is also a lesson with the example of a child who gets upset over having to leave a fun place, and the child is supposed to pray that she will not "get mad over nothing".

On the positive side, there are very nice pages about helping others and sharing with others, taking care of pets, being thankful and saying regular prayers, telling the truth, etc. I am still looking for a book that is similar but does not condone corporal punishment and is more developmentally appropriate for the preschool age it seems to be written for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend: Great Springboard!, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Right Choices (Hardcover)
This book is a great springboard for discussing moral lessons with a young child. At 4 years old, my son is too young to discuss "moral issues" as we adults think of them, but he is old enough to be taught and to understand "Right" and "Wrong." I belive it is my job to teach him these lessons, and this book is a fantastic tool for that. We use it as a bedtime devotional. There is just one lesson per page, accompanied by a colorful picture that provides a good visual tie-in of the lesson and keeps my kids involved in the story (I ask them to point out things or identify things in the picture. Actually, many of the stories ask them to do this, too).

My favorite part is the simple prayer and Bible verse that accompanies each little story. Because of the Bible verse, we're able to tie in the "Right" or "Wrong" choices with what the Bible says. That way, my kids don't just learn a bunch of Good/Bad Behaviors, but they learn the Bible verse supporting it. Plus, if you have your Bible with you, instead of just reading the verse written in the book, you can actually open your real Bible and look up the verse. I LOVE this because it's modeling to my kids to turn to the Bible to find the answers and guidance we need.

Each story includes simple questions to go with the lesson, but I usually add to the questions as the questions are very simple (but that's nice for younger kids!). A fun bonus is the little ladybugs on each page...we begin each lesson by looking for the hidden ladybugs and counting them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets children thinking about their decisions, August 7, 2007

A very good book. Touches on many topics such as sharing, being wary of strangers, stealing and other important situations children will have to face. This is not a book you can sit down and read through in one sitting like a story book. I found it worked best to read one or two pages at a time and discuss the issue along with any questions the child may have. It's a good book to save and re-read at times until children "get it".

Oh, and my children loved looking to find all the hidden ladybugs on each page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have in our household, August 11, 2007
This review is from: Right Choices (Hardcover)
This book is a great tool to introduce biblical character training to young children. Ken Taylor addresses character issues such as honesty, politeness, and kindness to animals in a very kid-friendly way. There is a picture, story, prayer, and Bible verse to go along with each theme, and some questions to discuss with your child. The illustrations are cute and the book as a whole is a big favorite with both the parents and children in our house.

It's one thing to tell your child that they need to be patient, for example, and another to show them what being patient looks like. This book does a great job of illustrating Christian virtues and making them accessible to young children.

A wonderful book!

My kids LOVE reading this book every night before bed. The lessons are very practical and relevant. The other thing my kids enjoy doing is finding the ladybugs on each page after we have read the story. Awesome find!

I thought this was a great little book for a 4 year old. My daughter kept on asking, "Let's do the next page!"..... This was a confirmation that I made a great choice in selecting this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars great memory verses, July 7, 2008

This book has great memory verses for very young children (3 and 4). The lessons are short and good but certainly not complete for character training. We read one story a week and work on the verse for the whole week. We review the old verses also.
