4.0 out of 5 stars Great tribute to a great band
I was recently introduced to the Go-Betweens on a trip toAustralia and have really enjoyed the one album I brought back with me(their "Best of" collection: Bellavista Terrace). I liked it enough that, when I stumbled across this 21-song tribute album, I thought I'd give it a try. As tribute albums go, it holds up pretty well. The song selection is great and it's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Another tribute album by unknowns for an unknown band
Unless you are a fan (and I am a big fan) of the go-betweens this in not the place to start. If you have all their material as well as all the solo stuff, and you have a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket then buy this. The versions are not better than the gobees versions but they do give some insight into the tunes. The go-betweens are a great band and a tribute...

The song selection is great and it's a good introduction to some other Australian artists. I still think I prefer the original Go-Between renditions, but it's worth a shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good renditions, October 13, 2002

Some of us have heard of the "unknowns" on this tribute album. Perhaps you've heard of a little band named Frente, who became popular from their cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle"?! I also enjoy The Earthmen and Ashtray Boy. As with any tribute album, usually the originals are better, so don't go looking to this or any tribute to be the answer to the Go-Betweens. Listen to the originals and the covers and judge for yourself. Or just take both as separate entities, which they are and can be. These versions of Go-Betweens hits are good on their own and can be good introductions to the originals.

The versions are not better than the gobees versions but they do give some insight into the tunes. The go-betweens are a great band and a tribute album by known artists doing interesting versions might help their profile, but until that day, this cd will have to do.
