Book Description

January 12, 1998
Marshall Field Finney was named after a department store and dropped like a hot potato when his mother suddenly packed up and left.  Now Marshall lives with his hard-drinking father in a crackerbox house and rides a yellow bus through beautiful St. Louis County to his mostly white suburban school.  Caught at a crossroads, Marshall is desperately searching for something to believe in.  At stake is only the rest of his life.

In this extraordinary novel, David Haynes tells the heartrending story of Marshall's journey through a broken world, where his father's new girlfriend, a poem by Yeats and a white teacher with big plans for her favorite students all seem to have the power to change him.  And as Marshall struggles to make sense of his life, the haunting letters begin to arrive from his runaway mother: "We are linked tighter than fine gold chains.  Who knows when we'll next be together--"

A tale of the ties that bind and the ties that fall away, Right by My Side is a cry from the heart, and a masterful novel of love and awakening by one of America's most gifted young writers.

Winner of the ALA's 1994 Best Book for Young Adults Award as well as the Minnesota Voices Project Award, Right by My Side is the heartrending story of 15-year-old Marshall Field Finney. When his mother suddenly takes off to find herself, Marshall is left with his hard-drinking father. Every day, he makes the long journey to his affluent, mostly white suburban high school. Caught at a crossroads, he is searching desperately for something he can hold on to. At stake is the rest of his life.

Just as Marchall begins to find a few signs that give him hope for his futures, he receives a series of haunting letters from his mother, who reminds him that they are "linked tighter than fine gold chains." A heartwarming tale of the ties that bind--and the ones that fall away--Right by My Side is a masterful novel of love and awakening by one of America's most gifted young writers. -->

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-Teens will adore this book, but they won't know who is right by the hero's side until the end of the story. It seems that everyone has suddenly either physically or psychologically left 15-year-old Marshall to fend for himself. Rose, his mother, suddenly disappears and Sam, his larger-than-life dad, can no longer function without her. YAs will become personally involved with the young African American, his parents, and his two best friends, all of whom are vividly portrayed. Even minor characters stand out. An honest, streetwise, funny, and thoroughly engrossing story.

From Kirkus Reviews

This charming debut is a funny and cynical coming-of-age novel about a sullen teenager who discovers storytelling as a way to control his rage. Marshall Field Finney has a lot to be angry about. A high- school sophomore with few friends, he lives with his parents in ``Washington Park,'' a crackerbox housing development for black folk outside St. Louis. With a gripe against ``unfair'' existence, Marshall can't stand his parents (``a deranged Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima'') and sinks further into a funk when his high-strung mother walks out on him and his father, who manages the local landfill. Comically self-absorbed, Marshall pretends not to care, settling into easy bachelorhood with his brooding father, ``the trash king of St. Louis County.'' Marshall's two best buddies are his only allies in misery. Artie, a slow-witted mama's boy with a GQ wardrobe, lives above his grandmother's general store; and Todd, Marshall's redheaded protector, is the worst-off--he's ``P.W.T.'' (poor white trash). When Marshall rejects the special attention of his p.c. English teacher, she settles for the smitten Todd, who remakes himself in her radical image. Meanwhile, at home, Marshall's dad resigns himself to his wife's absence and begins a stream of short-lived romances, ranging from Annie B. Semple, who eats in her sleep, to Gayle, a no-nonsense nurse who begins to chip away at Marshall's tough exterior. Haynes places Marshall's historically-charged question ("What am I, invisible?") in a modest context, a boyish search for identity. With its gentle mockery of victimology and its smart-mouthed humor, Haynes's artful fiction should appeal to a wide audience, including the savvy YA crowd. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars Something Different can by good for you., June 12, 2000
This review is from: Right by My Side (Paperback)
RIGHT BY MY SIDE was a good diversion from the hectic day. It reached into the center of the title character as he bared his soul and became honest with him view about his mother, father, and himself as a young man growing up within his troubled family. Even I couldn't have guessed the ending, and that made the trip worth the effort. Good job, David!

3.0 out of 5 stars Right By My Side, December 16, 1999

This review is from: Right by My Side (Paperback)
The novel Right By My Side, by David Haynes is an insightful piece of work with a believable protagonist that must cope with believable problems. This book should be read by any adolescent who is experiencing divorce or has a difficult family life. The novel is one most people could relate to, but I don't recomend it for those who like a challenge. It's straight foward (and perhaps offensive dialect) is honest and gives the novel its edge to reality. A simple, yet pleasant read.
