"Where is the Jazz?",
By Jazzman98 (Musicland, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Right in My Soul (Audio CD)
I keep reading the reviews here touting this disc for it's "jazziness". Needless to say, I am NOT impressed with Ms. Dulfer's lame attempt to overlay her vocals to "background jazz" riffs. She is a much better player than this and she is now developing "Ronnie Laws disease" - where you believe that vocals are your bread & butter.
There are a couple of fine cuts on this disc worth mentioning - specifically "December"; "Valdez In The Country"; and the last song "Lost and Gone". How ironic....this should probably also be the title of the disc!!! Hopefully, the next disc will provide a more fruitful listening experience. For unadulterated Dulfer Funk - check out "Live in Amsterdam"....you won't be disappointed.

An incredible jazzfunk CD from a very talented female artist,
This review is from: Right in My Soul (Audio CD)
This is an excellent CD that is entertaining from start to end, and every tune is tastefully arranged by the entire band. For this effort Candy takes it up another level, both in terms of her incredible sax playing as well as showcasing her beautiful voice more than ever with her singing on each song. This is a very mainstream jazzy funk CD that will get a lot of radio play on the jazz stations, and has a variety of grooves on it that should please everyone and impress any critics at the level of diversity achieved on this release. Candy has learned quite a bit from her papa Hans, who himself is an incredible sax player and band leader also, and it seems that Prince had a big influence on Candy since her participation in his band last year along with sax maniac Maceo Parker. I'd recommend buying 2 of these CDs, one to listen to and one to serve as a backup after you've worn out the first CD from playing it non-stop from beginning to end, as all 14 tunes on this CD are well arranged and enjoyable to listen to every time. When I first heard Candy back on her incredible first release titled `Saxuality', I had it on cassette and wore out the tape in about the first month, so I later bought another copy on CD. This new CD is equally impressive and is the kind of compilation that I believe Miles Davis would have really enjoyed listening to and playing on as well. The title cut is about her first time seeing and hearing Miles Davis perform, and I must say that this CD will `hit you right in your soul' once you've heard it through, and especially if you have the delightful opportunity to see and hear Candy (with Funky Stuff) play this new music live on stage. Earlier this year (in May) I was very fortunate to see/hear Candy perform this new material live on 2 different occasions with her band in her homeland of the Netherlands, and each show was excellent and the level of her playing, singing and leading the band and getting the crowd into it was at a very high level of energy that very few musicians come close to anywhere in this world today. This CD is a definite must have for all of you jazz fanatics like myself, it's one of her best efforts to date and truly demonstrates her mastery of the instrument and a genuine understanding of composing mainstream jazz grooves to a funky beat. All of the members of her band are extremely talented and blend together wonderfully, and while listening to this CD if you do not get up and boogie than you either don't have a pulse or you don't have an ear for true quality jazz music, or both. There isn't one bad song on this CD, and if you are fortunate enough to catch this material performed live by Candy and Funky Stuff in the future you will have an even greater appreciation for the level of her playing and singing, and will have a better understanding of what Prince refers to as "real music played by real musicians". Candy continues to impress me every time I have seen her perform, and this new CD is a wonderful inspiration to horn players and musicians around the world, as music is a universal language, and she speaks her mind on every note. Just buy this CD and if you are unsatisfied for any reason I would gladly buy your copy from you to give as a gift to someone else who truly appreciates good quality jazz grooves and a beautiful woman who can play an incredible sax AND sing! I cannot think of any other musician who can play the sax, sing on each tune and lead a band so well as Candy does on this release and tour. A must have for any jazzy funk fan!!!

where's the sax?,

I was originally interested in Candy Dulfer because of her great, groovy sax work with Maceo Parker on his "Life on Planet Groove" CD. I really liked "Sax-a-Go-Go", so I bought "Saxuality" and "For the Love of You" and enjoyed them, too. Since "For the Love of You", though, Candy Dulfer has tried to do more vocal work. Sure, I'll respect her decision to go that route, but when she does songs and mostly slow-tempo sax playing, she loses my interest. "What Does It Take" was not very interesting to me at all, but at least it had some funky groves. "Dulfer and Dulfer" was a step in the right direction back to funky jazz, but "Right in My Soul" is mostly bass-bass-bass-bass-bass. It's the kind of music you bob your head to in the car, not the kind you just stand up and dance to no matter where you are. They sound like generic head-bobbing songs, in fact: I mean, ANYBODY could be singing this and anybody could have programmed them. Nothing special. There are, what, three songs maybe that are mostly sax music, and they're all slow, but not quite smooth.
So, if you like bass music, you'll like this album. If you're a smooth jazz fan, you'll hate this album. If you're a funky jazz fan, you'll wonder what the hell she's doing. In the meantime, I'm waiting for the US release of Maceo's "School's In" and hoping that Candy's next album has actual music, instead of just bass.

Not her best but still fun, to say the least,

This is a fun cd but a little too much pop for my taste. First half of this album is nothing but Candy singing to bubblegum pop music. The second half has a Latin feel to it, which is nice. This is a nice album to give to someone who only listens to only pop and swears to not like jazz. But for someone looking for an honest jazz cd, this isn't it. I just hope Candy puts more saxophone in her next album, and a lot less vocal.

when it displays its soul and dispenses with the drum and bass. First of all this is not even remotely a jazz cd, I count 8 of the 14 tracks that would be considered drum and bass/downtempo. ...My Soul will be purchased on the strength of of MY LOVE alone which is flat out the best urban track I've heard in 2003. Other highlights are the cuts Everyday People, December and the quirky Freak Out. Don't get me wrong, Candy can blow and Mindy Adair should contact her for some lessons, but most of Right in My Soul sounds like Kraftwerk attempted to make a jazz cd....
