When it comes to pop, Atomic Kitten is the cat's meow!,
By
This review is from: Right Now (Audio CD)
Most American audiences may have gotten a taste of British pop trio Atomic Kitten when their song "See Ya" ended up on the Bring It On soundtrack and figured, hiss!, it's a hairball! Let me say first off that "See Ya" is an okay song but one listen to the rest of Right Now, their debut, and you'll discover 24 carat catnip. The kitty treats, er... tracks, are a real meow mix here. AK must have grown up on old school disco, especially with the opening of the title track, "Turn Me On", and "Do What You Want". There's even some of that funky wicka-wacka sound present that starts off the "Theme From Shaft" inside. However, the influence of the Spice Girls sound is also clearly present here, with a few more bells, whistles, whooshes, and other funky sounds added so as not to make them a me-too version of Spice. Feature tracks? "I Want Your Love" shows that Steps doesn't have the monopoly in putting countrified touches on songs like "5 6 7 8". That's due to the orchestra string sample of "Big Country" interspersed throughout the song in contrast to the hee-haw guitars on Steps' tune. And now, the centerpiece of the album, namely the gorgeous heartfelt ballad "Whole Again", replete with its gospel-like chorus. A running time of 3:03 adds to its radio-friendliness. Small wonder this song purred for 3 weeks at the top of the UK singles chart. They were singing this for what their 27 lives were worth. This song reminds me of Chicago's "Look Away", which had a similar theme. "Get Real" and "Hippy" shows their R&B side, a la All Saints. I hope they get a well-deserved push in the U.S., because when it comes to pop music, Atomic Kitten are the cat's meow. So, meow! And meow! And... meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow! meow!

Teen outlet for OMD song-writing duo...,
By Si Wooldridge (Chippenham, Wiltshire England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Right Now (Audio CD)
Most reviews for this CD are based on how strong the songs on this album are without seeing the song-writing partnership behind Atomic Kitten. This is fine for those who just like this genre, but most of those who aren't into teen boy/girl bands will probably dismiss this without a thought. For anyone who doesn't know, this partnership is Andy McCluskey and Stuart Kershaw from OMD. Who? Only one of the best synthpop groups of the 80's, remember Enola Gay and Joan of Arc? This group was formed by McCluskey when the popularity of OMD waned in the mid-90's.I've been watching their progress with interest, but only recently took the plunge to buy this album. I'm 33 years old and a big 80's and modern synthpop fan and regardless of the decent songwriters I had fears that this might be typical boy/girl band pap. I was gloriously wrong. McCluskey and Kershaw have geared this firmly towards the teen market but the songs are very strong and quite diverse in sound. McCluskey and Kershaw have written 11 out of the 14 songs on this album and did most of the programming and keyboards. This is pedigree. I have to say that the girls vocals fit the style of songs quite impressively and I'm sorry to have waited for so long. Some are the ballads that you would expect, but the majority are a mix between glorious sing-a-longs or quite quirky songs that you would expect of OMD. Favourite songs: Right Now, Whole Again, Strangers (with sitar...) and I Want Your Love. The latter uses a sample of The Big Country by The City Of Prague Philharmonic orchestra, some may remember this from the 808 State hit The Only Rhyme That Bites back in the late 80's (it's better here!). Shows a lot of promise in proving that the OMD song-writing is still as strong as ever, don't think we'll see Romance Of The Telescope Part II though...

well the first time i heard about the atomic kittens was acutally 2 days ago on television. They were performing "Whole Again" and after i saw them and listened i was hooked. i got to hear the rest of the album and was so shocked at how amazingly catchy and fun it was. GReAT ALbuM !! except a few songs are a little annoying after a while. Faster, more pop-like songs such as "You are" and "Follow Me" are really some of my favourites along with the slower songs like "Cradle" and "Eternal Flame". The only ones i really dont like all that much are the one's that sound like they're from the disco era. but other than that, GO BUY THIS! :)So many of the songs on "Right Now" are so good. It's just a shame that they arent more popular in NorthAmerica, but i have a feeling that they will soon. I read on the Internet that they are making a new video of "Whole Again" so they can release it in the States, and im sure once they see these kittens, they'll be hooked just like me. :) PS. i'd just like to say that Tash is the prettiest girl in the world :P

Atomic Kittenz Are Better Live!!,

All these songs are great, no doubt about it. I don't know why they included the tracks "see ya" and "I want your love" when Jenny isn't even in it. If you are interested in buying this cd, I highly recommend the DVD "right here, right now" because the kittenz perform all of the tracks off this cd plus others. To be honest they sound a whole lot better in the DVD and the music sounds better also. The only bad thing is that you cannot play the right here, right now DVD in your audio player and just listen. I wish they had a live cd of all the tracks on "right now" because this cd is kind of a turn off when you hear them perform in concert. On this cd, Lil's voice isn't as strong as you would know it to be, besides in the song "whole again," and she's my favorite too! Buy the right here, right now DVD along with this cd and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about! This cd is still worth the money!! It's still a great album!!

Although I initially discredited AK as just another girl band, I'm pleased to say they have grown, although I do fear that they are straying from their initial fun style of music (heralded by my faves on the album Right Now - extremely catchy _ & I Want Your Love) to more mid-tempo type songs which have yielded them uber-stardom in the UK (Whoel Again & Eternal Flame, both of which were No 1). Add to that an additional 2 hits (See Ya & You Are) & you have a lot of singles, a lot of fans & increased interest. Who knows if they'll be around in years to come, but the music's good now if you like this sort of thing.

Atomic Kitten are the best girl band around, and this album proves it. It has two extra tracks: "See Ya" & "I Want Your Love" which are well worth the money for. Both are awesome. With top tracks like "Eternal Flame", "Tomorrow & Tonight", "Strangers", "Cradle", "You Are", "Get Real", "Follow Me", "Right Now" & "Whole Again" (All are my faves) this is one great album. Not one song is bad, and there is something on this CD for absolutely everyone. Jenny, Liz & Natasha are gonna go far! If you like pop music, this is a MUST buy. Atomic Kitten are talented (That Natasha has a great set of pipes) and my fave girl band!

I love this CD, and I love different knind's of music. But this kind of dancy pop is so addictive, that I cannot take this cd out of my cd player. I swear, it is well worth the purchase, and I will never bore of my fave songs such as Whole Again, Eternal Flame and Cradle. All the songs on this cd are either full of energy or soulfull ballads. Ths one is a winner! So original and superb.A must have for pop or Atomic Kitten fans. |
