Ron's interesting oral story-telling ability translates very well into text. It's probably better to be familiar with his delivery so you can "hear" it on your head rather than read it cold. But either way, this is a great read and I hope Ron has plans for another book soon!! If you have a long flight or bus ride ahead, I highly recommend this one to make it fly by! I just wish he'd come by Massachusetts once in a while!!!!!!

Bought this book for my Dad for Father's Day, but read it myself first!,

If you haven't seen any of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, do yourself a favor and check it out. The typical lineup includes Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, and Ron White. Now Foxworthy has been around awhile, and Larry has been on the scene for the last couple of years, but I was unfamiliar with Ron White until I saw him on Imus recently. Ron White is pure, raw humor!
My father loves George Carlin, and buys his books whenever George gets around to writing one. Well, Carlin had nothing on White! White is as raunchy and unadulterated as Carlin. Now, mind you, one must like this type of humor, and be able to take the surprise of what might come; consequently, it is not for everyone. However, if you like this genre of comedy, White easily takes a page from Carlin and carries it off superbly. SILENT is a rendition of White's standup routines, which is very well translated (written), and "laugh out loud" funny. Those who like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour or George Carlin can't go wrong with White's SILENT. This is just a hilarious guy whose written a like-minded book.

Ron White is a funny guy. I've seen him numerous times on the Blue Collar Comedy DVD's and I have his CDs and he always makes me laugh. When I started reading the book I realized that the material was stuff I'd already heard. Thankfully, as I read on I realized that it wasn't all old material. To fully appreciate Ron White, you need to see his live performance with his Texas twang and sipping scotch like it was spring water. The book is a quick read and for any Blue Collar Comedy fan, you'll love it.

Anyone who appreciates Ron White's storytelling ability will LOVE this book. In my opinion, he is the standout performer in the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" shows. The book contains some familiar stories from his stand-up routine and other material that describes his life before show business.

For Ron White fans, there is nothing new in this book. In fact the 304 pages are half cartoons -- which are somewhat funny but takes away from the real subject -- Ron White. I'm a huge fan of Ron White but this book was actually boring in spots. If you have seen him on TV or DVD - then you've seen the best he has to offer. I'll buy his next DVD but an author he is not. Nice try Ron but this one came up short.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Jeff Foxworthy. Like everyone, I guess, I enjoy his "redneck" humor but what I appreciate the most about him is that he has helped bring a number of other comedians to the world in the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour." One of the comedians who owes the most to Foxworthy is Ron White, a debt "Tater Salad" acknowledges very clearly in this book. Foxworthy deserves his kudos, then, because Ron White is, in my opinion, the funniest of the "blue collar" comedians.
In this book, White alternates chapters of his onstage work with chapters on his life. One thing is clear--Ron White is not a person with whom I would ever want to be friends. His "backstage" stories mostly fall into the category of "funny to tell later but not funny while it was happening." By the time he gets to the night he spends at his "friend," Bill Engvall's, house, I was thinking that Mr. White was too much for me. On the other hand, I laughed out loud so many times while I was reading this book that my wife made me read in another room so I'd stop bothering her with my noise. There is no doubt that Mr. White is a polished comedian who can tell a story that is every bit as funny on the page as it is to hear him tell it. His bit about the plane flying from Flagstaff to Phoenix may be one of the funniest comedy pieces of all time. I doubt a lot of people who aren't already familiar with Ron White will bother to pick this up; however, it is worth reading by anyone. I'm not enough of a fan to be completely familiar with all the stuff here so I was happy to come across new things. But, even if you are already a Ron White fan and know these riffs by heart, this book is for you. There are laughs on every page.

Can't bring myself to give this book less than 3 stars as I'm a big Ron White fan, but this book seems to be an attempt to raise some quick funds for further casino outings. Most of this "320-page" book is size 12 fonts at an average of 1 double-spaced paragraph per every other page (always opposite a rather low quality caricature-type cartoon) with wide margins. I found myself halfway through the book in less than an hour. As noted by a recent poster, you could easily squeeze this book into a 50-page paperback. Much of the material is repetitive from earlier acts, although there were a few bits and pieces of some new stuff thrown in. I enjoyed the few parts where he wrote about his past, and how he got to where he is today, and of course everything about Sluggo, but must admit that overall I'm disappointed with the book. Stick to DVD's Ron, your standup is second to none!

Far From Comedic As A Read,
This review is from: I Had the Right to Remain Silent...But I Didn't Have the Ability (Hardcover)
I had recently seen Ron White on cable tv for the first time &
he readily caught my attention for many reasons to the point I was excited to read this book. It was a ho hum read for me with very little humor and, not that I am vain in any way, but the use of the same four letter word repeatedly throughout his book got old real fast and lost whatever punch he may have thought it had. The photo illustrations were okay but took up alot of pages in the book to make this probably the fastest read you could imagine. My sense is that his audience would benefit far greater from viewing his shows than reading his books.

Foxworthy, What Has thou Wrought?,

This review is from: I Had the Right to Remain Silent...But I Didn't Have the Ability (Hardcover)
Ron White is not JUST a Comedian, like Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy (and a handful of others like Bernie Mac, Kat Williams and Chris Rock), he has become a genuine American institution. He is the "genuine article" and this book tells why.
Not only does it contain all of his most famous jokes, but the least famous ones as well. It gives us a window into his soul, the very reasons for his immense talent: It grows directly out of his experiences, which are nothing if not a checkerboard of ups and downs, barely surviving on the thinnest edge of the margins of U.S. society. But then with a "game" and irresistible ability to bounce back, White rides his "Texas cowboy persona" back into town and on to success. His "highs" always kept getting "higher" than his "lows," until he finally hit the jackpot on the "Blue Collar Comedy tour." But that is not the best part: The best part is the book also tells us how he became a comedian. Interspersed between his best and his worst jokes, Tater tells us all about these "ups" and "downs": The long period of incubation; his drug, women and marriage habits; all those trips back and forth across the U.S. in his pickups, vans and buses; his raucous late night "creeping" and partying, even his art business in Mexico, and on and on. For those who love White's comedy, this is a collectors item; for those who don't yet know him, this is an unimaginable surprise: Either way it's a win-win: We all are immeasurably enriched by his talents, and that includes him. Five stars. |
