A Right Royal Christmas: An Anthology [Hardcover]

Hugh Douglas (Compiler)

Book Description

October 1, 2001
This engaging anecdotal anthology begins with an overall view of royal events during the traditional 12 days of Christmas - revolution, births, marriages, deaths, murder...We hear how the first Queen Elizabeth celebrated the season, and of Mary Queen of Scots' festivities and disapproval of the Scots church after the Reformation. The Queen's message is one of the traditions of a British Christmas, and publication of a picture showing Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's family enjoying themselves around a Christmas tree led to its foundation as part of our traditional Christmas. From Dickens' little-known piece on the role of King Herod, written for his own children, to the crowning of William the Conqueror on Christmas Day, 1066, and the celebrations of today's royal family, this book shows how the monarchy have contributed towards and celebrated Christmas through the centuries. Carols, poems, legends and lively illustrations are brought together in this stocking filler for royal-watchers, with contributions from Robert Herrick, Simon Schama, Samuel Pepys, the Duke of Windsor and many more.
