Atypical, Inspirational, Deserves More Notice, April 29, 2009
Hopefully with the upcoming release of the "Tennessee" film this track will receive a little more attention.
Zany, hare-brained, tabloid princess - call her what you want, she probably deserves it - but one thing Mariah Carey is not given enough credit for is the depth and quality of her songwriting. Whether writing a straightforward, infectious pop tune, seductive R&B or inspired, lovelorn ballads, she always has a strong command of language and melody and, despite what biased critics have to say, does not write the same song twice, at least generally speaking.
"Right to Dream" is a stark, low-key ballad with Mariah's lower register and an acoustic guitar guiding the way. The most brilliant, perplexing attribute of the tune is that not only does Mariah absolutely (I caught an early screening of the film) tap into the dynamic of Krystal - she is, as they say, "in character" in the song. She captures and melds together an interesting range of emotions; Krystal finds strength within herself and knows she will survive, and in that lies great comfort and resilience, but the song, particularly through its plaintive melody, still fully communicates the sadness and heartache that accompany painful life transitions, of burning down bridges and the hardships that mark making a fresh start. This is a song of optimism, but it does not deny the presence of dark clouds above.
If "Tennessee" had been released to the general public in 2008 this song would have had a real shot at an Oscar nomination. It is a stirring, moving theme and a great compliment to the film. Highly recommended.

Beautiful & Inspirational, December 12, 2008
This is a beautiful and inspirational song. Although I am saying this as a Mariah Carey fan, I think that this song crosses all boundaries and genres of music and its among the likes of other inspirational songs she has done; like Hero and Through the Rain.
