Award-winning presidential scholar and speechwriter Wynton Hall brings together the Republican Party’s greatest oratorical gems, from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Teddy Roosevelt's the Man with the Muckrake to Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" and George W. Bush's "our mission and our moment" speech after 9/11. Hall examines the historical context of each of these great addresses and reveals the persuasive secrets that make each speech truly outstanding.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Hall, a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, believes that "Leftist Academe" has effected an "erasure of Republican remembrance," something he seeks to correct with this collection of 17 speeches by members of the Grand Old Party. Some of these texts are seminal pieces of American political oratory—Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech; Reagan's 1987 remarks at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. In his prefatory notes to each speech, Hall teases out themes, such as commitments to "individualism, military strength, and self-reliance," that have long marked Republican thinking. Unfortunately, Hall's hysterical introduction to the book—which is more about the "radicalized professoriate" and the "liberal Democrats [who] dominate our nation's campuses" than about Republicans—will alienate readers who don't share his partisan viewpoint. Indeed, this anthology doesn't adequately testify to ideological diversity within the Republican Party; yes, Lincoln's two most famous speeches (the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural) lead the book, and Hall includes two by Teddy Roosevelt, but after that, it's on to William F. Buckley and Dwight Eisenhower. This would have been a much different book had Hall included samples of, say, Radical Republican speechifying during Reconstruction. (Mar.)

In 2006, Hall and President Reagan's Secretary of Defense and the former chairman of Forbes, Caspar Weinberger, published "Home of the Brave: Honoring the Unsung Heroes in the War on Terror" (Forge/St. Martin's Press, 2006). The book chronicled the jaw-dropping valor of 19 of the most highly decorated soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines fighting in the War on Terror. Sean Hannity called it "One of the most important books yet written about the War on Terror."

Hall is co-author, along with President Ronald Reagan's chief political strategist and pollster, Dick Wirthlin, of "The Greatest Communicator: What Ronald Reagan Taught Me about Politics, Leadership, and Life" (Wiley/Trade Division, 2004). Hall was previously an intern for United States Senator Connie Mack and also worked in the Florida State Senate.

He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in political campaigning, speechwriting, communications, and presidential rhetoric at Texas A&M University, East Tennessee State University, and Bainbridge College.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even those of other parties will gain insight from this collection, May 4, 2007
This review is from: The Right Words: Great Republican Speeches that Shaped History (Hardcover)
This book is valuable for two reasons. First, it is not a random collection of one person's view as to what constitutes a great speech. The 17 speeches examined here are oriented around eternal Republican themes of individual (rather than collective) responsibility; a belief in values that are absolute, not relative; and a strong national defense, the foundation of individual civil liberties.

Second, each speech is intertwined with commentary on its historical setting. Platitudes need no explanation. Great speeches, though, are rooted in a specific historical context while also appealing to timeless values.

Those of other political parties will gain from reading this book. It is not meant to convert but to educate. Serious people will want to look beyond the caricature of Republicans so often presented in many media sources. Understanding the basic beliefs of one of America's two major political parties is valuable regardless of one's political persuasion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read !!!!, February 3, 2007
This review is from: The Right Words: Great Republican Speeches that Shaped History (Hardcover)
"I loved Hall's last book. This one is different but just as good if not better. It felt like I was in the audience for these famous speeches.
I was familiar with some of them, but others I'd never even heard of, which made it all the more fascinating to read. If you're a Republican I don't see how you can not read this one. It's a fun, fast read. I give it two thumbs up."

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!, February 3, 2007
This review is from: The Right Words: Great Republican Speeches that Shaped History (Hardcover)
As a college student that has limited time for reading material other than textbooks, I consider this one a must-read. Hall's writing style, I found, provides for a quick and enjoyable read. And as always, the content itself is impeccably researched and organized. I highly recommend this as a must-read for all, no matter the party-affiliation.
