Afrocentrism At Its Finest, May 14, 2011
This review is from: Righteous But Ruthless (Audio CD)
1990 was a year when a lot of Hip Hop music was focused on self awareness and black unification. The powers that be would objectify to this and needed a deterrent to detract Hip Hop from a direction that Public Enemy was taking the music to. When "The Chronic" by Dr. Dre was released in 1992, the music then went from one form of appreciation to another thus putting artists like a King Sun into obscurity. Thankfully, we have an album like "Righteous But Ruthless" to remind that an album that drops mad science can be as entertaining. The biggest knock on King Sun was that people felt he sounded like Rakim, however, the way Sun carried himself from each album had let me know that he wasn't faking with the voice. This record was his best. Lyrically and musically there aren't many letdowns and the lyrics flow smooth in the pocket. Oh yeah, at around 6'7... Sun may also hold the title for tallest emcee to hold a mic.

When Hip-Hop Was Civilized, April 26, 2007
This review is from: Righteous But Ruthless (Audio CD)
As a member of the Nation of Gods and Earths (aka 5% Nation) I was VERY proud of this brother when he came out. This album is, for the most part, a solid piece of work. Stand out songs are "Be Black", "The Gods Are Taking Heads" the collaboration with another group I highly recommend, Poor Righteous Teachers (PRT), and my perosnal favorite, "Universal Flag" which is so hot I HAD to go out and get this album.
I gave this album a 4 because it's not a perfect 5 in my book; it's very good, but not great. Songs like "Stunts" and "Soft Shoe Booty" take away from the overall quality of the album.
That being said, it's still a worthy purchase and brings us back to a time when Hip-Hop was not about Cadillacs and Grillz but righteous talk, teaching those who would listen, about the knowledge of self.
Peace!

ESSENTIAL HIP HOP FOR THE TRUE FAN AT HEART, February 8, 2007
This review is from: Righteous But Ruthless (Audio CD)
this is raw, authentic hip here. man, this made me want to get a high top fade and some ewings or something. my head would not stop noddin'. love the PRT collaboration on here. my joint on here though is BE BLACK. i wish that today's hip hop was more like this in the modern sense. today, there is too much emphasis on the material. this takes me back to that conscious era when cats were saying something to reach, teach, and uplift!!!!
