4.0 out of 5 stars The other reviewers are wrong!
I have to completely disagree with the other reviewers. Even though you may not have heard of Dag, this album exhibits some of the best, funkiest, downright nastiest infectius grooves. Check out 'Sweet Little Lass', 'Lovely Jane', 'You Can Lick It', and 'Candy' - Those 4 songs are all worth the price of this CD alone! Take it from me, I own about 2000 cds, and this is...

1.0 out of 5 stars Stuck on the Shelf
The lyrical composition is weak, obviously not a lot of thought went into them. The vocals are totally annoying, not to mention whiny. Musically, the beats are common mainstream and lack all strength throughout most of this cd, although they do hit home sporadically within a few bars, which only accentuates the flaws that lie therein.

By the way, this is the first time I read a review and just knew that the other reviewers were completely 100% wrong about this album. I'm not associated with Dag in any way, just a fellow musichead trying to tell you whats up and set the record straight about Dag Righteous.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the GREATEST FUNKIN' RECORDS, December 26, 2003

DAG -Dem are Grooves- Is the kind of band America should be full of. It doesn't matter that it's a group of white kids in a predominately black genre. They nail it. They kick it off with "Sweet Little Lass", which to me is one of the two weaker songs on the album. It has some good lines but for the most part it carries on at the end. The other song that is a little weak is "As". I understand the Sly and Family Stone feel they were shooting for, but Sly was a little to strange for anybody else to pull off successfully. The tracks that really pulled me in were:

"Even So" -- This song is big and FULL of music. It makes you move and they added in crowd noise here and there. It is strange production but good.

"Plow" just an all out funk attack

Then there are the two "baby-makin" tunes, "Candy" and "You Can Lick it". Don't miss those.

Look if you don't buy this album, you're a fool or you don't like funk and I think that puts you back in the fool catagory.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, July 1, 2003

I got this cd when it first came out and didn't pay much attention to it. For some reason I was compelled to break it out again two days ago. I discovered that it doesn't have a weak track on it. I think it might be the cd that makes me want to start listening to alot of funk music. Everyone in this band is very very tallented. The guitar work is astounding. Lots of jazz/blues chords (which are pretty tough) and nice solos. The bass player is awesome. I like it when the bass does something different than the guitar and DAG has mastered this skill. The drummer isn't all fast and throwing out amazing fills. Thats not what he's there for. He keeps nice rhythem and really keeps the song togeather. The singer is fabulous. He can hit high notes like no one else in the world. They are from my home state or North Carolina, and that makes them extra cool. Check this out. Anyone who likes music will love this cd. My friends that like blues, love DAG. My friends that like 80's rock, love DAG. My friends that.....u get the point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, Fun Listening, January 11, 2006

A very, very good debut... Some excellent stuff on here, like "Sweet Little Lass" and "Lovely Jane". Rather hard to describe besides saying that it's sort of a fusion of pop, rock, funk, and occasionally oldies-style stuff by a great band who bring back that funk infusion to the twenty-first century. . Just buy it and listen to it without expecting something completely fresh and you'll be pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funky, May 5, 2004
By A Customer

I like this album alot, as well as Apartment 635. I wish they were still together. Just a fun, funky record. I don't consider it an R&B record, and with how truly AWFUL (so-called) R&B is now, it's a compliment. There are the obvious influences such as KC, Sly, James Brown, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few. I don't consider it a pure funk album, more pop/funk My favorites are "Sweet Little Lass" and "Candy".
Bobby's voice, at times raspy, can hit the high notes. The arrangements are tight. A talented band. As for all the comments about them being white, big deal. In addition, I saw them in 1995, and they were amazing live.

Seems like nobodies happy with funk anymore unless it's a blatant P-Funk rip off.
Well unfortunately for those people Dag will not cater to the flood of P-funk trend whores and wannabe Funk'o'nauts.
No, No, no, DAG is a bit of the funk, a bit of Rock 'n Roll, a bit of Prince style Pop licks and a bit of that nasty porn you hide from your girl in the back of the closent.
It's not original, but it's good.
There are a couple songs that this record could've done with out, I'm not to hip on the title track "Righteous" or a couple others but the ones that stand out make this CD worth spinnin.
Sweet Little Lass, Lovely Jane, Home, Mama's Eye's and a couple other's
A few silly grooves that make me laugh listenin to em and a few that I skip but I've loved this groove compilation enough to buy it twice having lost it the first time.
It's not the pinnacle of funk for sure, more like the dirty cousin that funk keeps in the closent for bachelor parties and drinking binges.
Thick bass licks, nasty guitar (like junk yard bacon grease nasty), decent keyboards and drums with extra backbone and a couple of ribs. And if you wanna complain about not understanding the lyrics then you shouldn't be listenin to funk there Gomer Pile.

Check it out, it's at least worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have this CD, April 16, 2005
This review is from: Righteous (Audio CD)
I followed DAG when they were together to several live performances and they were fantastic live and I really miss seeing them, that being said, I would like to say that this CD is great. I still listen to it often. There is nothing like it on the radio today. It is fun and funky and written and performed very well. Listen for yourself, you will not be disappointed. The fact that everyone who has written reviews, except for maybe one tone-deaf redneck has given it a 4 or 5 star rating speaks for itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best funk since Boosty Collins, May 8, 2003

I think I can make this pretty simple ... if you like funk, you'll dig this album. If funk isn't your thing, this album probably won't grab you. But for funk fans, there are some terrific cuts on this album --- my personal favorites are the sultry "You Can Lick It" and "Candy," as well as the more uptempo "Sweet Little Lass," "As" and "Righteous." Yeah, it's derivative. Yeah, it doesn't expand the genre. But it's solid funk. That's the whole point.

5.0 out of 5 stars "With them wide lapels and slicked back hair...", May 22, 2000
This review is from: Righteous (Audio CD)
...Dag's got yer Candy. This is the grittier of Dag's two album. "Apartment 635" sounds as if they were trying for a top 20 hit, and that's not something they should be ashamed of wanting, but, whereas "Righteous" has a lot of that dusty backroad Mack Daddy feel--especially with jams like "Home", "You Can Lick It.." and my favorite, "Candy" (no, not the same as either Cameo's or Confunkshun's--ya gotta hear this version)--"Apt 635" seems to go for Steely Dan-ish uptown depravity. To me, for Dag that doesen't work. They should try to keep that Tarhills Average White Band thing they had with this one. Oh, by the by, get this if you can find it. I recommend it...pop it in your car CD or tape player and play it loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible funk album., September 16, 2009
By
This review is from: Righteous (Audio CD)
Ok, I'm a white boy. But I love funky music, and while Dag may be a bunch of white boys, they can lay down the funk with the best of 'em. I don't know why this album faded into obscurity, nor why their sophomore effort went nowhere--this band should have been huge. Guess the time wasn't right?

I picked this disc up from a used CD bin on a whim back in 1994 and was immediately hooked (and floored). Sure there's a lot of good funk music out there, and these guys are just standing on the backs of giants, but do they do it well! Probably nothing new here for true connoisseurs of funk, but the execution of this band is superb. Rhythm, guitar, vocals, it's all just perfect, and the songs are pretty good to boot. Sweet Little Lass, Your Mama's Eyes, and Lovely Jane are standout tracks and worth the cost (cheap now, buy it used!) of this CD by themselves.

If you like funk, buy this album right now.
