Book Description

October 11, 2007
For a long time I have been collecting the intriguing English language words, phrases and stories that came to us originally from textile sources. You could call it my words rag bag. We stitchers are notorious for hoarding bits of fabric and thread, always promising to create some wonderful quilt or embroidery from these fragments. I have, at last, made something tangible from the contents of my writers rag bag and I hope you will enjoy reading Rigmaroles and Ragamuffins as much as I have enjoyed piecing it together.” Elinor Kapp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weaving a spell with textile words, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Rigmaroles & Ragamuffins: Unpicking Words We Derive from Textiles (Paperback)
Before reading this fascinating little book, I didn't have an inkling about the connection between sewing and the Kama Sutra or how drizzling almost undressed a French aristocrat. I didn't have a clue about all the odds and ends of words and phrases we use that can be traced back to thread and textiles. "Inkling", "Sutra" (think of "sutures"), "clue", "odds and ends", "drizzling", "sleazy" and so many more words derive from textile processes.

This well-researched book is great as a reference for quilters, weavers and other textile folks, but quirky and entertaining enough to enthrall anyone who just loves language and its history. The author writes in an easy, conversational style with enormous wit and enthusiasm. The bonus: entries are short, so you can dip into the book any time and come away with a juicy morsel. "Rigmaroles & Ragamuffins" is a joy - and the best gift I got this Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read for a textile junkie, December 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rigmaroles & Ragamuffins: Unpicking Words We Derive from Textiles (Paperback)
This is a great book packed with fun and inspiring words from the world of textiles. I originally bought it to inspire my blog name. While I didn't end up using any words from the book for my blog , there was plenty of inspiration here. Lovely read and perfect gift for the textile junkie in your life!
