Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 8^-12. In 1992, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a Mayan Indian woman from Guatemala. This biography in the Contemporary Profile and Policy series combines Rigoberta MenchuTum's personal story with a contemporary history of her people's struggle against racist oppression. It is a harrowing account, but Schulze does not exploit the violence. At the age of 8, Rigoberta was working in the fields. At 12, she had a job as a maid in a household that saw her only as "a lazy worthless Indian." Her father was her model in organizing the Mayans to fight for land and civil rights against the landowners and the brutal military regime. He was imprisoned, tortured, murdered. So was her 16-year-old brother; she saw him publicly burned to death. Then her mother was killed. Rigoberta carried on their struggle, empowered herself by learning Spanish, and taped her life story, which was published in 1983. Teens will be moved by this story of a courageous woman who has risen above poverty and illiteracy to help change the world. Hazel Rochman
